MAP Testing this Week
Washburne students will take the winter MAP assessment this Tuesday, January 26th and Wednesday, January 27th.  As we did in the fall, hybrid in-person students will take the assessment when they are present in the building.

Remote students will test on these same dates in a separate test session.  Remote families should review this letter  from the district for more information specific to completing the MAP in a remote setting.  Most importantly, remote students will need two devices to complete MAP (their school iPad plus an additional device).  Remote families should complete this survey  to indicate whether or not a second device is available to the student at home.  The Washburne tech team will provide an additional device if one is not available.

Washburne Winter Conferences
Winter conferences will take place on Thursday, February 11th and Friday, February 12th.  As in the past, families will be able to sign up for five-minute, individual conferences with each of your child's teachers.

Please look for an email later this week from Mr. Horwitz with more detailed instructions to sign up for your child's conferences.

Project ALERT Notice
8th Grade Families,
Once a week in our 8th grade Kinetic Wellness class, our focus is on Drug/Alcohol awareness and resistance techniques.  We follow a curriculum called Project ALERT by the Rand Corporation.  The curriculum focuses on the more common substances that teens may encounter- alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and inhalants.  We also will discuss vaping within these lessons.  The students will learn about these substances, and will also learn about ways to get out of a situation that a student may find themselves in.

This topic can be a challenging one for parents to have a discussion with their children.  Throughout this unit, students will have some short homework assignments that are designed to be done in collaboration with you.  One reason for doing this is to help create a dialogue on this subject and continue the conversation with you at home.

If you would like to learn more about this curriculum, you can find information on their website: https://www.projectalert.com/

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
Andy Becker, Victor Cooper & Candice Florance

DISTRICT NEWS

Winter MAP Testing
We are approaching our second testing window for the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test, which will take place between January 25 - February 5, 2021.  Your child's school or teacher will inform you of his or her specific testing dates.

Similar to the fall, all students in Grades 3 - 8 will take one Reading test and one Math test.   MAP is a computer-adaptive test, which means every student receives a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions.  This provides a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student's learning level.  The purpose of the second testing session is to provide teachers with midyear progress data that will help inform their instruction as they move forward into the school year. Winter student reports are not sent home. Student Reports are sent home at the end of the school year with fall to spring growth measures.  Additional information on the MAP assessment may be found on our district website at:

Opportunity from District Artist-in-Residence partner, Filament Theatre
3rd-8th graders are invited to participate in a Filament Theatre project called SPARK.  Your child may be familiar with Filament Theatre, an Artist-in-Residence partner. This February, SPARK participants will attend a few virtual workshops with Filament directors AND get to choose the art, projects, and plays made at Filament this year. They'll review ideas from artists all over the country and pick three favorites to bring to life at Filament. SPARK is for 3rd - 8th graders and it's all FREE, but you need to complete an application (linked below) by January 28th.
