July 2020
Dear Adelphi family and friends,

June was a pivotal month for many reasons.

Adelphi is eager to transform for the greater good and, while agile and responsive, our mission remains steady—to continue to provide an academic experience that transforms students’ lives and prepares them for careers of purpose in a rapidly changing world.

This month, I am pleased to share some stories from our University and community that share a theme of adaptability, transformation and the future:

I wish you a safe and enjoyable summer and am confident that we will be stronger, wiser and well prepared for our new academic year.
All the best,
Christine M. Riordan, PhD
President
STEM Superstar
Jennefer Maldonado ’20 was discouraged from studying STEM in high school. She found the courage to brilliantly major in both mathematics and computer science at Adelphi.
Planning for the return to campus. What might students expect when campus reopens? Our Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students R. Sentwali Bakari, PhD, explains.
Coronavirus and the future of telemedicine. Social distancing is helping telemedicine become the new normal. What other medical technologies may soon enter the mainstream? A. Hasan Sapci, MD, College of Nursing and Public Health assistant professor, provides some hints.
A career changer returns to Adelphi. Ingrid Howell '10, MA '18, hopes to land a position at FEMA—and a future in emergency management—through Adelphi Online.
COVID-19: Predictions From a Disaster Epidemiologist. In an interview, K.C. Rondello, MD, clinical associate professor in Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health—and national authority on disaster epidemiology—discusses the coming year.
Research: Addressing Maternal and Child Health Inequalities
Across the globe, women and children experience public health problems at higher rates than the general population. Korede K. Yusuf, PhD, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Public Health, has dedicated her career to addressing this issue, especially as it concerns maternal health and fetal development. Read about it in “ Early Interventions," a feature article in our Fall 2019 Academic and Creative Research Magazine.
Alumni Making a Difference—A Gala Thank-You
I thank Adelphi’s alumni—and our current music students—for their brilliant virtual performance of “Seasons of Love,” from RENT , Jonathan Larson ’82’s Broadway musical. Their Facebook Watch performance helped raise funds for the President’s Student Success Scholarship, which provides support for juniors and seniors who experience financial difficulties. You can still see the performance—and donate to help .
