Happy October, TDPS! We are happy to announce our TDPS Virtual Series, which includes student produced works, performances by student organizations, and master classes and workshops with guest artists. The virtual events are a great way to engage with the TDPS community and share original work in the digital space. Check out our upcoming events in the TDPS Virtual Series listing below.
We would also like to share updates from Drew Barker, our Performing Arts Librarian, about new resources available at the Performing Arts Library:
-
National Theatre Collection: This database brings the stage to life through access to high definition streaming video of world-class productions and unique archival material offering significant insight into theatre and performance studies. Through a collaboration with the UK's National Theatre, this collection offers a range of digital performance resources never previously seen outside of the National Theatre's archive.
-
BroadwayHD Collection: The BroadwayHD Collection is an essential collection for students and researchers of the performing arts. Upon completion, it will include 25 award-winning live Broadway plays and musicals curated especially for performing arts scholars. It is also invaluable for studies in drama, music, dance and literature.
-
On the Boards.TV: This website offers high-quality videos of full-length performances by some of today's most provocative artists working in dance, theater, music, and other forms that defy categorization.
In January 2021, the University Libraries will also activate a subscription to The Black Scholar, which is an influential journal of Black Studies and central to the emergence of the field.
These significant acquisitions were made possible by the support of the Smith family.

Fall MFA Dance Thesis Concert
November 19 & 20, 7:30-9:30PM
Free, streaming live, tickets required
Join us for a livestream of this fall's MFA Dance Thesis Concert with work by choreographers Rose Xinran Qi and Krissy Harris.
Ghost Bride
Choreography by Rose Xinran Qi
Ghost Bride is based on the Asian tradition of a ghost marriage, when a man dies early in life and his family recruits a young woman to marry him in spirit. Through a combination of movements derived from postmodern dance and classical Chinese dance, this work conveys a story of revolution for women’s rights through time and place. Qi evokes the Chinese feminine form Shenyun (bearing) through breath control in order to communicate the internal emotion behind specific movements.
Responsive Wild
Choreography by Krissy Harris
Responsive Wild considers and questions notions of womanhood and femininity. Inspired by family history, rock and roll, and physics concepts, Harris investigates these ideas through highly physical, bold and expansive movement. The work is in conversation with feminist theories and reveals a complex interrelationship of the inside/outside body and its potential for energetic expression.

Congrats to MFA design alum Peter Leibold VI '19 on being shortlisted for the Live Design Design Achievement Awards for 2020! He was recognized for his work on Orange Grove Dance's "Children of Babel." Theater critic Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune said of Leibold's design: "It really is an extraordinary set of images that keep defining space in all kinds of unexpected ways and that meditate quite beautifully on how lighting intersects with the human body." Vote for the most outstanding designs now until Thursday, October 22.
- Our MFA Design students, alumni, and faculty are working as virtual media designers on the Arena Stage Flash Acts Festival to develop 40 new plays here in the US and in Russia. The designers involved are associate professor Jared Mezzocchi, MFA Design alum Kiana Vincenty '20, and current MFA Design candidates Taylor Verrett and Andrés Poch, all working through Mezzocchi's new company Virtual Design Collective (ViDCO). The festival runs until October 15.
- MFA Design candidate Andrés Poch has been working as executive producer, art director, and live graphics mixer on Juke Joint Live, a multimedia live show about the lives of Black folks in America. The show features live guests, recorded sketches, and interactive segments. They will air their next episode on October 25. If you are interested in participating as an actor, director, stage manager, or designer, please contact them at their Facebook page.

On September 26, TDPS professor Scot Reese directed “Distance Learning,” written by his long-time collaborator playwright Carey Crim. Jason Daunter (Disney Theatricals and Broadway Stage Manager: To Kill a Mockingbird, A Doll’s House Part 2, Wicked, Chicago, etc.), along with Laurie Metcalf (two-time Tony and three-time Emmy Award Winner) and The Purple Rose Theatre, commissioned Crim to write the play through PWJ (Projects with Jason). The play was about a teacher and students navigating online learning during the COVID-19 shutdowns while dealing with an ever changing world outside.
