WaterSmart and water system leak notifications
During the Christmas Week cold spell, the City's 911 Dispatch Center received dozens of residential water leak calls, and many households and businesses requested assistance with water system shutoffs. Understandably, many residents were out of town and called dispatchers to say that a friend or neighbor had noticed water running down the driveway or into the alley. This situation highlights the benefits of signing up for a free program called WaterSmart.

University Park is partnering with WaterSmart to provide an online Customer Water Use Portal so you can monitor water consumption while at home or away, avoid costly leaks, and contribute to the City's water-saving goals.

With the WaterSmart Portal you can:

  • Track daily water use
  • Receive leak alert notifications
  • See how your household water use compares to City water customers with similar lot size
  • Receive notifications when your daily consumption exceeds the prior day's consumption by a volume threshold you set
  • Get bill forecast notifications
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Reminder on parking restrictions
On recent visits to our Snider Plaza and Miracle Mile shopping areas, you may have noticed more frequent parking enforcement! Most parking spaces in both retail centers have a two-hour time limit, and all 15-minute slots are marked with signage that is posted in front of each spot. Our Parking Enforcement Officers are actively patrolling, so to avoid a citation, please adhere to the parking limits in these areas. Remember too, parking in the Hilltop Plaza garage on the south edge of Snider Plaza is free for the first hour.

Additionally, the City has five Residential Parking Districts, established by the City Council so that residents living near Highland Park High School, SMU and the Moody Family YMCA have available on-street parking. Residents who park at curbside during restricted hours must display a special parking sticker on their vehicles. Vehicles without a valid sticker, visitor hang tag, or temporary paper pass are subject to citation.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
Disposal of old smoke detectors
Smoke detectors have about a 10-year lifespan. If your smoke detectors are that old, or they are no longer working and it's time to install new ones, here's how to properly dispose of them: After removing the unit's batteries, place the old detectors in your household garbage. Smoke detectors, vacuum tubes, and other specific items are exempt from licensing in the Texas Radiation Control rules (25 TAC Chapter 289).

As for the batteries, please do not place dead household batteries in your garbage or recycling bins. Batteries are one of a long list of items that Dallas County's Household Chemical Collection Center will accept. The Center is located at 11234 Plano Road. Click on the button for more information about the Collection Center.
