Register Today - DC CFAR Basic Sciences Core Virtual Research Day |
Please register to join the DC CFAR Basic Sciences Core Virtual Research Day on Friday, August 20 from 2:00 -5:00 PM ET. This online event will bring together Basic Sciences Core service providers and other Basic Sciences HIV investigators to present their services and research to members of the DC CFAR community.
The Virtual Research Day will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. David Volsky, Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Volsky's talk will be followed by a series of presentations by DC CFAR Pilot and Transitioning Investigator award recipients and HIV researchers at different stages in their careers:
- Dr. Mark Burke, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Howard University
- Dr. Rebecca Lynch, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Tropical Medicine, and Immunology, George Washington University

Recording Now Available: DC CFAR Developmental Core Pilot Awards Program 101 |
On August 6, 2021, the DC CFAR Developmental Core hosted a "Pilot Awards Program 101". The event provided an introduction to the DC CFAR and an orientation to the Pilot Awards Program, which aims to provide pilot funds on a competitive basis to HIV/AIDS investigators to assist them in the development of their NIH-funded research careers. Pilot Award recipient Dr. Sarah Calabrese (GW) also presented on her experience navigating the DC CFAR and its resources and the pilot awards process. The recording of the event and slides are now available on the DC CFAR website.

Join the 2021 Virtual Inter-CFAR Women and HIV Symposium |
Please join the upcoming virtual 2021 Inter-CFAR Women and HIV symposium hosted by the University of Washington/Fred Hutch CFAR on October 12-13. This event will feature mentorship opportunities for early-career investigators, virtual networking and competitively reviewed abstracts for oral and poster presentations.
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit abstracts for a poster session and symposium presentations on Women, HIV and COVID-19. Abstract submissions are due by August 24.

Meet the Investigators: DC CFAR SBS Core Co-Director Dr. David Huebner |
Dr. David Huebner, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Prevention and Community Health at George Washington University, serves as the Co-Director of the DC CFAR Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Core. An expert in behavioral, psychological, and community health, Dr. Huebner brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the field of HIV/AIDS research and intervention. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Huebner’s work seeks to understand the underlying psychological, physiological, and behavioral mechanisms that link social marginalization to health, and to create effective psychosocial interventions to improve health outcomes.
In his role in the DC CFAR, Dr. Huebner hopes to collaborate with colleagues in establishing a training program to support doctoral students and/or postdoctoral students who want to study behavioral and social aspects of HIV/AIDS. He also hopes to increase the amount of interdisciplinary research supported by the DC CFAR and values how investigators benefit from the collective resources of the DC CFAR’s partner institutions.

Patricia Nalls is the Founder and Executive Director of The Women’ s Collective (TWC), a leading community health and human services agency in Washington, DC. TWC stands alone in the D.C. region as the only agency dedicated to meeting the needs of women and girls in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic and protecting their rights.

FUNDING, TRAINING AND MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES

The Inter-CFAR Implementation Science Working Group is accepting applications for an NIH-funded training opportunity in implementation science (IS) for early stage investigators (ESIs) engaging in HIV-related research. Interested applicants should apply online here by August 20.
Gilead announced two new funding opportunity announcements around two initiatives: Gilead HIV Age Positively which supports programs focused on improving the quality of life for those who are aging while living with or affected by HIV and Gilead TRANScend that provides direct grants and capacity-building assistance to trans and non-binary-led organizations.
The Vu is focusing on empowering new voices by offering three fellowship opportunities for researchers in viral hepatitis and HIV spaces. Each fellow will be awarded a personal stipend to conduct a research project related to HIV, Hepatitis C, or both, using data on AIDSVu and/or HepVu, along with other data sources. Applications are due August 31.
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) is seeking innovative and effective approaches to improve pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication and antiretroviral therapy (ART) utilization among racial and ethnical minority individuals who are at increased risk for HIV infection or are people with HIV (PWH). Register by September 24.
The Journal of the International AIDS Society (JIAS) published a supplement on "Oral abstracts of the 11th IAS Conference on HIV Science, 18-21 July". The supplement includes all oral and late breaker abstracts from the conference.
NIH is requesting information from stakeholders on the utility and useability of sample language developed for use in informed consent documents for data and biospecimen sharing. Response to this Notice is voluntary. The deadline for responses is September 29, 2021.
