From Our Pastors
"We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.”
The quote is from Dorothy Day, the legendary New York Catholic social activist. Published in her 1952 autobiography “The Long Loneliness”. Her perspective seems particularly apt today, when isolation has made loneliness more real for some, and heightened an awareness that love and community are the only solution for the many social ills that beset our country and our world.
Without the usual ability to connect via community how do we keep love alive? When political debate seems to delight in dividing rather than uniting, are we in danger of losing the ability to talk to each other? When name-calling and fault-finding have become the currency of debate have we lost a shared language in which to communicate? When factions insist on their exclusive rights and refuse to compromise how do we serve the common good?
It appears more important than ever to find ways to connect. To reach out. To listen. To learn. To share. To see the other and seek to understand.
From the beginning of the pandemic we have sought ways, innovative and tested, to provide connections. Community connections based on the abundant love of God revealed to us in Jesus.
Jesus who so clearly joined together, in the one great commandment, the love of God and neighbor and self.
Each of us has the power to make that love real again in our day. Reach out to someone. They may be feeling alone and hungry for love and community. You can be the giver of that gift. And in doing so you may know more deeply the truth of St Francis’ peace prayer: “it is giving that we receive.” In fact, it is giving that we create the space to receive something we cannot give ourselves: the grace of God via the love of another.
Every human being needs to be seen, heard, understood, known... loved. Every human being needs, at least at some level and at some time, community.
Write a note. Make a phone call. Send an email or text. Maybe reach out to someone you have not be in contact with for some time or for some reason. Make an invitation to meet for a cup of coffee or a walk in the park (appropriately physically distanced and masked, of course). Communicate in whatever way seems appropriate, but find ways to connect beyond the mandatory or perfunctory.
Be the love you want to receive. Community is more difficult these days but it is still possible. Indeed, the love it makes possible may be more necessary than ever.

Anti-Racism Task Force
The Anti-racism task force group began meeting to work on plans for action items developed following the 3 sessions where members of color in our church communities talked about their experiences with racism. We will focus on actions within our parishes and local communities. An overall goal is that anti-racism will become an imbedded aspect of all committees and groups at the Brooklyn Oratory.
