September Monthly Theme: Coping with Crisis & Self-Care

The 2020-21 school year is in full swing and we are all adjusting to new and different ways of teaching and learning while also finding time to take care of our children, families, friends and most importantly, ourselves.

The current world climate and COVID-19 has caused ongoing stress, anxiety, uncertainty and worry for all of us and it is important that as adults, we first focus on our own social emotional well-being so that we can best serve and support our students. Simple self-care strategies like physical activity, taking deep breaths, journaling, practicing gratitude, listening to your favorite music, etc. are all effective ways to lessen stress, anxiety and depression. In schools, we can also find time to support both adults and students in processing emotions, sharing challenges and reflecting with one  another.

After attending to your own self-care, it is important that as Advocates, we support students by fostering a sense of safety, connection and consistency in daily activities. In addition, we can provide students with opportunities for processing emotions, to learn and practice coping skills and build resilience.

This month's (September) resources focus on Coping with Crisis & Self-Care. If you have ideas or a recommendation for future topics, please reach out to Ellen Sarkisian at [email protected] and please enjoy the resources below.
