Living in the season after the Epiphany: Christ revealed to the World
Our church is now shifting into a new season of the church year, the season of Epiphany. Much as our work & family lives are oriented by the rhythms of weather (spring, summer, fall, winter), of school (fall semester, spring semester, summer break), or of a fiscal calendar year (which may begin, for example, on Jan. 1 or Sept. 1), the church lives according to the rhythms of Christ's life through seven seasons: Advent (the coming of Christ which begins our church year, usually right after Thanksgiving), Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and the Season after Pentecost. The season of Epiphany, which begins January 6 and lasts until Ash Wednesday (February 22 this year), marks the revelation of Jesus to the world.
The Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6 begins this season as we celebrate Jesus' revelation as God's Son to the Wise Men, representing the world at large, the world beyond that of faithful Jews. For the next 6-8 weeks, our scripture lessons reveal how Christ is manifest as the Light of the World, especially through three additional, notable events from Christ's life: his Baptism, his Presentation in the Temple, and his Transfiguration. One of our Epiphany hymns, Hymn #135: Songs of Thankfulness & Praise ends each verse with this refrain, "God in man made manifest." God in man made manifest - worship in the Epiphany season seeks to shed light on what this divine truth reveals in our lives here & now.
