Good Afternoon,
Today in your child's folder is an update on his or her reading level.
We use an assessment called Fountas and Pinnell that aligns with our district & state expectations.
Inside the folder is a sheet that will show you what level your child can read independently. Then you will see a chart that shows the grade level expectation. Attached to this will be a sample of what a text at that reading level. On the back side is a text one level higher so you can know how to help your child grow his/her skills.
How do you determine the reading level?
This measures the way your child can read actual words (decode), read smoothly with expression, and understand what happened in the text.
What if my child is not at the grade level expectation?
This is a complex process!! Some children simply need more exposure, practice, and time. Just because your child may not be at grade level expectation doesn't mean they haven't made huge growth. Also, we are closing gaps with our school closures from last spring. This is a process.
What can I do?
One of the biggest indicators of helping your child's reading success is reading at home.
-
Some students may bring home "We BOTH Read" books inside their Baggie Books. On the left side the adult reads and on the right side the child reads. The text levels are different. Watch THIS video to understand more.
- Read Baggie Books
- Lexia (10 minutes)
- RAZ Kids (10 minutes)
We're so proud of our reading growth! Celebrate & encourage your child to ENJOY books. Reach out if you have any reading concerns or need help 'hooking' your child to a topic or author.
Stay Well,
Emily Lech, YGS Principal
