Reaching Out to Seniors in Delaware County
LASP paralegal offers decades of experience to area seniors
LASP paralegal Karen Tyler has been reaching out to seniors for 40 years, first
as a secretary in the Delaware County Legal Aid's Elder Law Unit and then for the past 30 years as a paralegal. Her wo rk takes her across Delaware County to senior centers, expos, and community health fairs where she meets with seniors about a variety of civil legal matters that impact their lives.  With 15% of the Delaware County's population aged 65 or over, there is a great need for advocates who have specialized knowledge about elder legal issues.

Ms. Tyler offers "Law Day" presentations at all of the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) funded senior centers.  At the Good Neighbor Senior Center in Sharon Hill, Ms. Tyler recently met with seniors about wills, Power of Attorney, bankruptcy, delinquent property taxes, and other matters.

Helping her to spread civil legal outreach to seniors in the county is a team of volunteer advocates that she is currently training. These advocates  will be placed at Good Neighbor, School House and Hometown Senior Centers this month where they will  distribute brochures and information, and refer those needing assistance to Ms. Tyler.

Next up for Ms. Tyler:  Meeting with Delaware County seniors at State Senator Tom McGarrigle's Senior Expo on October 15 th in Essington, PA.   "I t's a great privilege for me to assist our senior citizens, the most vulnerable in our society," she says.
