Indigenous 101
In January’s “Understanding Indigenous Culture in ND” Series, we're starting with the basics - knowing the names, recognizing the flags, and learning the size of each of the five federally-recognized tribal nations that share geography with the state of North Dakota. Click here to view the article.

From there, we’ll highlight the North Dakota Essential Understandings, a program that the North Dakota Department of Instruction began in 2015 to help train and assist educators in better understanding and being able to genuinely connect with their Native American students. Its premise is to share the very sacred nature of Indigenous elders and the historical storytelling that they provide to younger generations.

Lastly, we’ll dive a bit deeper into the uniqueness, histories, and presence of each of the five federally-recognized tribal nations, starting with the Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara.

Please continue to engage in lifelong learning and walk with us through this series learning about our Indigenous students, families, neighbors, and friends.
2nd Annual Inspired Student Art Fair
Attention: BURLEIGH, MORTON, and SIOUX Counties educators and school communities:

With the support, partnership, and sponsorship of CREA, the Second Annual Capital Gallery Inspired Student Art Fair will be held during the month of February 2022.  Eligible student artists aged 16-18 from schools within Burleigh, Morton, and Sioux Counties are invited to submit original artwork between January 22-25 by using this entry form.

The goal of the Inspired Student Art Fair is to celebrate student artists and to expose the artistic talents of area youth inside a world-class art gallery, giving them the experience of represented artists, including the option to sell their submitted artwork. A celebratory reception for all selected artists and their supporters, along with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship to one student artist, will be held on February 16, 2022.

All educators in Burleigh, Morton, and Sioux counties are invited to share this incredible opportunity with students and their families and encourage students to submit their original artwork for consideration to the Second Annual Capital Gallery Inspired Student Art Fair.
CRACTC Updates
December Student of the Month

Congratulations to our December Student of the Month, Jack Schaefer from Des Lacs - Burlington High School! Jason Horner nominated Jack because he "is a natural, especially when it comes to programming. He’s taken several of my classes and has aced just about everything. He has a serious interest in becoming a video game programmer and he has all the tools to make that happen. On top of that, he’s a great kid that I’ve really enjoyed getting to know. I can’t wait to see what he does in the future."

Keep up the awesome work, Jack!
High School Mobile Meats Lab

The CRACTC high school mobile meats lab concluded its stay at Wilton High School. In the photos below, Carissa Axt's students fought the cold while processing chickens. They finished up just in time for the students to show off their skills carving holiday turkeys with their families over break. The trailer has now traveled to Garrison High School where it will spend the next 6 weeks.

NDSEL Network Summer Summit

Save the Date for the June NDSEL Network Summit! More information is coming soon.

Kognito is an online, role-playing simulation to help school personnel learn to recognize the signs of distress, use conversations to approach a student and discuss concerns, and, if necessary, refer parents/students to the appropriate resources. The simulations allow school personnel to practice these challenging conversations at their own pace through role-playing with emotionally responsive virtual students.

The Department of Human Services Behavioral Health Division is offering these simulations available to all North Dakota school personnel at no cost.

Who can access Kognito?
Kognito is for all school personnel in K-12 public, private and tribal schools in North Dakota including but not limited to: teachers, support staff, custodians, paraprofessionals, district leaders, administration, etc.
