HCSO Newsletter #138 – Loving Our Neighbors
Message from Sheriff Ed Gonzalez:

On Tuesday, our Sheriff’s Office teammates joined community and faith leaders and Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal’s family to honor his selfless service with the official renaming of a local post office in his name.
The U.S. Post Office at 315 Addicks Howells Road in west Harris County will now carry on our brother’s memory for generations to come. Future Houstonians will learn about Deputy Dhaliwal’s legacy of kindness and acceptance. And they will learn about his ability to inspire everyone he met to love their neighbor unconditionally.
Harris County residents from all walks of life spoke of his special connection with the people in his district, as well as his deep commitment to a life of service and his faith.

It’s fitting that this historical commemoration happened on the same day as National Night Out – an evening dedicated to getting to know one another and strengthening our community bonds.

It gives peace officers another avenue to interact with our community beyond calls for service and traffic stops. We want to bring people together and push our neighborhoods forward through positive relationships and open communication.

We saw deputies throwing frisbees, spinning kids on a merry-go-round at a playground, kicking a soccer ball around, and giving out fist bumps. We saw them laughing, eating, and having fun with families across our county. We saw them giving tours of high-water rescue vehicles and tactical support equipment. A strong reminder that we’re all part of the same community. And that we all want to improve public safety and make our blocks and neighborhoods better places to live.

We hope that this week sparked that momentum to help our residents realize there is an opportunity to come closer.

HCSO in the News
"Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the post office would serve as a permanent reminder of Dhaliwal’s 'lasting contributions' of a 'committed public servant who touched countless lives.'

'He was a true hero who inspired everyone to love their neighbors,' Gonzalez said.

Dhaliwal’s relatives and Houston-area Sikhs said Tuesday’s dedication was a 'deeply meaningful' gesture in honor of the slain deputy.

Other representatives of the Sikh community said Dhaliwal’s work at the sheriff’s office reflected a deeper legacy, one of acceptance and kindness."
"The 38th annual celebration of National Night Out backed by the East Aldine Management District reflected a conscious effort to build trust between law enforcement and the community — a key to improving public safety.

Dozens of area families turned out for the Oct. 5, 2021 event at the District’s new Town Center great lawn and amphitheater for the celebration.

It was an opportunity for kids to see that flashing red lights and sirens are not automatically threatening or scary. And it was a chance for law enforcement officers to joke with pom-pom waving teenagers and toss Frisbees with young boys."
"The annual event allowed some residents to voice concerns about the crime increase Houston is experiencing.

Law enforcement leaders said events like National Night Out are a time to remind the community we can all play a part in a safer city.

'At the end of the day, the important message when we are concerned with a crime is to reinforce the notion that we're all in this together. We need the community to still call in with information that helps us solve crimes. We need them to report crimes,' said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez."
"Andrew Williams, 40, has been charged with capital murder. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Williams was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Harris County jail.

On Sept. 23, deputies said Martha Medina was run over and killed after being robbed at a McDonald’s restaurant located at 430 Uvalde.

Sheriff Gonzalez said Williams was out on bond in connection to a previous capital murder, in 2019, when Medina was killed."
