THE FRIDAY REVIEW

St. Rose School

March 25, 2022

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace

-1 Peter 4:10

Greetings from Mr. G

Children are gifts from God, each given unique talents by which they bring light to the world. It is our privilege and joy to help nurture these talents through the lessons, activities and interactions that make up this enriching educational experience. I hope you are following Mrs. B's Adventures in Student Life every Thursday morning -- it is a beautiful lens into student life, and light!

This week I received news that St. Rose School Class of 2019 alumna Erin Markut's painted image of St. Joseph was the winner in a contest run by St. Joseph High School where she is a Junior. It is heartwarming to know that she continues to bloom along her high school journey. We love to hear from our alumni, who leave our halls but never our hearts. They are out there making a great impact in the schools, workplaces and communities where they reside. If you have alumni stories please share them with Mrs. Moulder. advancement@srles.com.

Iowa testing is going well. Thank you for ensuring that your children are well rested and have a good breakfast. I am grateful to the teachers, proctors and students for making this a smooth process. Testing will continue through March 29th. On March 30th the school will participate in our annual Knowledge Bowl where fun and facts are the name of the game.

Mrs. Petrillo is working hard to make this a wonderful experience for our students.

Enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year is open. Please share the word with your family and friends about why St. Rose School could be the right fit for them. Word of mouth is our most effective marketing tool. Email Mrs. Coppola for information about tours and other registration details, admissions@srles.com. We have a rich history and a bright future because of you!

There are many exciting happenings to anticipate this Spring. International Week takes place April 4-8th, 8th graders receive Confirmation on April 30th, Second graders receive First Holy Communion on May 7th and we will welcome special guests to school on May 6th. On May 12th we are excited to host "Arts from the Heart", a combined art show featuring the works of students in K-8 as well as performances by our Band students. And we are all anxiously awaiting our Spring musical, Godspell -- details coming soon!

We continue our Lenten journey together, supporting the mission and reflecting on how we can be more like Jesus in our words and actions. Heartfelt prayers continue for protection and ultimate peace in the Ukraine. May God comfort those who are suffering, strengthen those who are supporting and enlighten those who are leading. Today is the feast of the Annunciation and most fittingly Pope Francis has consecrated Russia and Ukraine to our Blessed Mother. Let us join him and our brothers and sisters around the world in praying for her intervention in these troubled times.

Friday means Fish Fry -- why not give it a try? Next Friday, April 1st, Bingo will take place. The HSA team is doing an amazing job running Bingo nights. Please share the word! And, we are so pleased to be back in the church for Friday mass, t's always so wonderful to see you in the pews. Please join us if you can.

A couple of last notes: if you were not able to attend the Volunteer training session and would like to be a school volunteer, please email Mrs. Sweeting, secretary@srles.com. We will schedule another session when we have a reasonable amount of attendees. And, the Kindergarten-2nd grade classes are hosting a Flea Market during school hours on Tuesday March 29th. All proceeds will go to the Lenten Mission Drive.

Take time to relax and enjoy the signs of Spring this weekend.

God Bless,

Mr. G

PRESCHOOL CORNER

March winds and other weather trends are topics for discussion at Preschool these days. TK used the classic "Big Bad Wolf" story, with a hair dryer as the wolf, to demonstrate how wind blows and what objects will fall. Students chose items around the classroom and predicted whether or not the "wind" would blow them over. The 4's are counting Lion and Lamb days -- it's close! They are also learning their home addresses, creating artwork such as houses with open doors to identify number, street, town, state. Day by day their eyes are opening wider to the world around them; their love of learning fills our halls with joy.

HSA NEWS

Happy Friday, SRS Community:

We are thrilled to have more than 50 families joining us on Sunday for the mother-son event, Bowl-A-Rama with Your Mama. We are getting the final details organized for Sunday and need to help the bowling alley get ready for our big crowd! If you have not done so, please take 2 minutes to complete this form and to let us know your meal preference. Here's a link to the form: https://forms.gle/BBLDYhQrpwspCQHs8

The International Dinner will take place in the Gathering Hall on Wednesday, April 6th from 6:00-8:00 PM. We ask that each family bring foods in small portions from around the world. Due to allergies and food sensitivities we ask that all dishes are nut-free and that you display a list of ingredients with each dish. HSA will supply paper goods and beverages. A signup link for food and volunteers will be provided next week.

Dates have been set for so many fun events:

Wednesday, April 6 - International Dinner

Friday, May 6 - Special Persons’ Day

Monday, May 23 - Golf Outing

Friday, June 10 - Year-End Bonfire at Castle Hill Farm

More details to follow as we get closer to each event.

Volunteering for our school is a great way to give back. We need help with the upcoming events and a few other activities. In addition, we need a new HSA president for next school year. We invite you to contact us at hsa@srles.com if you are interested in learning more.

7th grade student are learning different forms of poetry such as Sonnets, Ballads, and Free Verse. According to Miss Vertucci, they began analyzing some of the great poets such as Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost for elements of theme and symbolism, which led students into creating their own thematic free verse poems. They were given complete creative control to determine a theme. Miss Vertucci gave them a random page from a novel (Frankenstein) in which hey were to find words that would communicate their theme. These words became the symbolic picture that they depicted on their page, emphasizing word choice using the blackout method.
