TO GIVE AND BE GIVEN – LESSON 1
ALMS
The Bible has much to say about giving. Sometimes it is about how we are to give. Other times it is about what we are given. In this series we will look at numerous aspects relating to giving.
Alms is defined as giving to the poor and needy. It may be money, food, or various items. We often call it charity. The bible speaks of giving alms. It helps widows, orphans, the homeless, the sick, and anyone in dire circumstances. We may give it to them directly or by contributing to a mission or church or organization that helps such people.
James 1:7 says, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction…”. To “visit” them is to meet their needs, not merely a social call. Helping the needy is a show of our love in Christ. It is a vital part of the “works” of a believer and counts for a reward in heaven.
James also writes about how we demonstrate our faith versus those who count on their good works to get to heaven without faith. It says in James 2:17-18 (NKJV), “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.’” If your faith on Jesus is true, you will desire to please Him in all things. How so?
Jesus’ number one commandment was “to love.” I Corinthians 13 speaks of that love in detail; without it, we sound as empty as tinkling brass. Our testimony is hollow and empty. Our love is shown in how we treat all people, especially the lowly.
Jesus spoke of alms giving in Matthew 6:1-4. He said (v. 4) “that thine alms may be (given) in secret (discreetly). And thy Father which seeth in secret Himself shall reward thee openly.” Verses 1-3 show Jesus rebuking the religious leaders for making a big show of their alms giving so that people would think highly of them. God gives no reward for such prideful acts. True alms are given from a heart of compassion (the expression of Godly love).
Tomorrow we shall look at another aspect related to alms which we call offerings. It is another way of showing our love for the Lord and for the lost souls.

GUARDING OUR WORDS
Words are very powerful. The scripture tells us in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Some of us are eating the fruit today of what we spoke last week, last month or even years ago.
If we realize that every word that we speak either brings death or life, we might be more careful what we speak. Our words put things into action, either positively or negatively. We should filter what we say through James 1:19 where it says, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren (Christians), let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” If we took this to heart, there would be less arguments, less “tactical clean ups”, perhaps less violence and even murder, all caused by words spoken.
God doesn’t want us to be in the dark about our mouths. He has given these scriptures to protect us from pitfalls. You see, Satan is a legalist, and he uses our words against us. When we speak something even in jest, like “these kids drive me nuts,” or “I could just kill you”, or “this is never going to work”, or “you’ll never change.” This gives Satan a legal right to come against you or the person that you speak about. None of these phrases bring life, do they?
How do you change the habit of speaking “death”? Holy Spirit will nudge us when we shouldn’t say something. He knows your thoughts and words before you speak them. If you entertain a thought that isn’t godly, and are about to speak it, there will be that nudge. If you observe these “nudges” and know it is God trying to tell you to be “slow to speak”, then you will change. If you ignore these “nudges” then eventually you stop hearing the leading of Holy Spirit.
This is true with swear words, anger, and any other words we speak. Even flattery can be a source of discord. We are told in Psalms 141:3, “Set a watch (guard), O Lord before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” Literally this is saying put a watchguard on our lips to keep the door of our mouths from opening when it shouldn’t.
Is this easy if you haven’t been the best at doing it? No, but God will help you. If you have been negligent or deliberately speaking things that bring death, and genuinely want to change, then repent. Ask God to forgive you, and He will. Then pay attention to the nudges and your words will change. You will then be bringing life and not death from your words.

EXHORTATION
God's peace is the only thing that carries us through the really tough times in this life. I learned many years ago the awesome healing power that God’s peace brings to a troubled heart and soul. Yes, it’s the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding and reasoning. Just in case you’re not experiencing that calm assurance you so desperately need...Pause for a moment, get alone, shut out everything and everybody... Then as you quieten your heart and your mind you’ll soon begin to sense the sweet peace that you’ve been needing as it so gently floods your spirit and your soul. Next you’ll feel that peace bringing such rest into your body...As you then begin knowing for your own self that your loving Father God will carry you through it all...No matter what. So don’t you dare give up; You’ve only been needing a pause break that in turn brought you to a much needed peace break. You can know you’re right now on the brink of a peace miracle...And it’s not time for you to POUT... But you gotta know...It is time for you to SHOUT. So begin to sing...🎵🎵🎵 I’ve got a feeling everything’s gonna be alright... All because I’ve had a little talk with Jesus And now His peace, sweet peace floods my soul
