At the June board meeting, Denise Watkins passed the gavel to incoming Chair Curtis Riggs. In recognition of all that the board accomplished under her three years of dedicated leadership, Chancellor Muñoz presented Denise, our "BOT MVP," with a custom jersey and crystal gavel. We are immensely grateful and look forward to Denise and Curtis' continued partnership and guidance advancing the work of the Foundation.

Teuila Hanson is the Chief People Officer at LinkedIn. In this role, she leads the team responsible for hiring, developing and growing top talent, including all benefits, employee experience and Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging programs.
Prior to joining LinkedIn, Teuila was the Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and People Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. In this role, she led the strategy and people teams and served as Chair of the bank’s management committee, creating an engaging workplace by driving bank strategy and integrating best practices in talent management, inclusion and diversity, learning and development, compensation and benefits, employee engagement and corporate culture. Teuila also held various leadership roles at AECOM Technology Corporation, a global professional services organization.
Teuila earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sonoma State University, and her juris doctor degree from Golden Gate University School of Law. She is a licensed member of the California Bar.

Mike Roland is a Vice President at E. & J. Gallo Winery and is responsible for New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and the Central Valley California Operations, as well as Corporate Engineering, Corporate Environmental Health and Safety, and Lean Six Sigma.
Mike joined Gallo in 2004 and has developed, led and implemented many of Gallo’s strategic engineering and operations initiatives. Prior to Gallo, Mike was the Global Process Technology Leader for General Electric and worked at Great Lakes Chemical and W.R. Grace in various technical roles.
Mike graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He also received his Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and is named inventor on two U.S. Patents.
In his spare time, Mike has a passion for aviation and is a licensed private pilot who volunteers for Angel Flight West, transporting ill patients to medical appointments.

Rodney K. Nickens Jr. '09 is an elected California Democratic Party Assembly District Delegate; a recently appointed Oakland Housing, Residential Rent, and Relocation Board Member; and the Program Officer for Policy and Innovation at the San Francisco Foundation. As Program Officer, Rodney works in partnership with the SFF Community Impact Team to manage a grant-making portfolio and advance affordable housing systems change. He currently serves as an Associate Member of the Alameda County Democratic Party Central Committee and sits on the boards of New Leaders Council Oakland and the Greenlining Institute Academy Alumni Association. In 2019, Rodney founded R&N Strategies, LLC, a political consulting firm focused on supporting progressive, grassroots candidates for elected office. He is a graduate of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law; UCLA; and the inaugural class at the University of California, Merced. Rodney is excited for the opportunity to serve his alma mater as an Alumni Representative on the board. He looks forward to diving into the work of the Advocacy and Awareness Work Group and ensuring that all students and alumni of the university receive the resources and support needed to thrive on campus and beyond.

Jan Söderström is Vice President and Head of Advanced Technology and Industry U.S. He is based in the Silicon Valley and reports to the Ericsson Group CTO. In this capacity, Jan drives the technology leadership work in 5G, Cloud and IOT including co-creation with ecosystem partners. He has built up the Ericsson D-fifteen Lab network platform for use case innovation and testing. Jan is also engaged in the quest for American leadership in 5G and 6G. He serves as the Vice Chair of the NextG Alliance and as a board member of ATIS.
From 2013 to 2017, Jan drove the NFV and cloud transformation program at Ericsson. Prior to this, he had a decade-long engagement at Ericsson Research heading research in IP and Cloud, including three years building up the Ericsson lab in San Jose. Jan has a PhD in Applied Physics from Chalmers University of Technology and spent his early career working with optoelectronic devices and optical networking.

Christine Long, Carol Bright Tougas, and Kenni Friedman have stepped down from their work group co-chair positions. We appreciate their leadership and are grateful for their ongoing service on our board.

Trevor Albertson Ph.D. ’09 has a history of “firsts” during his time with UC Merced. In addition to being among the university’s earliest doctoral students, having entered the World Cultures and History program in 2006 and earned his Ph.D. in Political Diplomatic History in 2009, he is the first UC Merced graduate to be appointed for a three-year term to the UC Merced Board of Trustees. Now he, along with his wife Katherine, have created the Albertson Family Fellowship Fund, making Albertson the first UC Merced alumnus to endow a fellowship.

Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott and her husband, Dan Jewett, have made the most significant gift to the University of California, Merced, in the university’s 16-year history.

In July, Joseph Bello presented his findings for the prestigious Donald A. Strauss Foundation scholarship to United Spinal, the longstanding nonprofit dedicated to overcoming the stigma of disability and increasing inclusivity for wheelchair users.
