55th Annual Membership Meeting
October 22, 2021 - 9:30 a.m.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Michael Stevens
Wholehearted Libraries: Meeting the Needs of Community
We should bring our hearts to work, and qualities such as open-mindedness, emotional intelligence, and reflective action are all part of this process. Services steeped in humanism, compassion, and understanding should be the cornerstone of what we do, and why we do it, for all members of our communities, including the underserved. Not only do libraries need high tech, they also need staff who approach their work with a wholehearted attitude.

The most important challenge we are facing in libraries now is ensuring we are open and welcoming for everyone. The world has changed so much in the last few years. We need to make sure our services meet the needs of those who might visit the library to feel safe. Those who need access to information and services that may help them get on solid ground in their lives. The underserved and the invisible should feel welcome and encouraged in our spaces, both physical, virtual and across the community itself. And every voice should be heard. Every story told.

We should approach information work in all of its forms with an open heart. We need staff to lead with the heart and to see every interaction as an opportunity to improve someone's life -- remove a burden, give some pleasure, and help them grow, etc. The best librarians make that emotional investment because they believe in the communities they serve.

Dr. Michael Stephens is Associate Professor in the School of Information at San Jose State University. He has delivered keynotes and workshops throughout the US and internationally on topics related to creative library services and learning. He has written for major LIS professionals publications, including 13 years with Library Journal as a columnist. ALA Editions has published two collections of his writings: The Heart of Librarianship (2016) and Wholehearted Librarianship (2019).
DIRECTOR'S CUP

Cheery Friday Greetings,

The SCRLC Board of Trustees met today. The Board welcomed Gabriela (Gaby) Castro Gessner, who is Cornell University Library's Director of Assessment and Planning. Gaby was appointed as Cornell’s representative after the departure of Camille Andrews, who left this past summer for a position in Virginia.

The Board also approved SCRLC’s 2020-2021 Annual Report, which was subsequently submitted to the State Library. Now work will begin on a more readable version of the report, which will be presented at the annual meeting!

Speaking of the annual meeting, I hope that you will attend! The meeting is for everyone—direct members and members of members, alike! We are also happy to welcome folks from outside our region! As you can see above, it will be held on October 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In addition to what will be an energizing and motivating presentation by Michael Stephens, Lauren Moore, our State Librarian, will provide an update, including more information about the American Rescue Plan Act program. As you know, SCRLC will be receiving ARPA funds for three categories: digital inclusion projects (to work with the public library systems and community partners), school library systems, and museum-library partnership projects. We are excited about the good work that will be accomplished under the auspices of this program!

Next week, we’ll send out the announcement for the annual awards, which will be presented at the annual business meeting (part of the Annual Meeting)—please be on the lookout! We have expanded some of the categories.

In the meantime, have a peaceful and relaxing weekend!

Yours in partnership,

Mary-Carol Lindbloom

ESLN Webinar: Project ReShare and IndexData Update
September 22, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Project ReShare represents a new approach to resource sharing technology in libraries, one that places practitioners in the driver’s seat and empowers libraries to work together to take ownership of the technology that powers their services. After three years of working together, the software is poised to go live this fall.

Presenters Kristen Wilson from IndexData and Pam Jones from ConnectNY will take you for a tour of ReShare returnables as it stands today, and share perspectives from the current migration efforts. They’ll talk about the current state of the community and the roadmap for the coming months and years. ConnectNY, a consortium of NY State academic libraries, is one of the first consortia to implement ReShare. Hear why ConnectNY decided to take this bold move and learn how to get involved! Register!

NEW COLLECTIONS
The Southside Community Center, still active today, was founded in 1934 to "affirm, empower and foster the development of self-pride among the African-American citizens of greater Ithaca." The History Center in Tompkins County has digitized dozens of images from the Southside Community Center from the first fifteen years of its history. On the left is Jerome "Brud" Holland's picture, seen above, from the 1937 Penn Cornell game. Brud Holland was the first African-American to play football at Cornell (and he was chosen All American!), the first African-American to sit on the board of the New York Stock Exchange, president of Delaware State College, and US Ambassador to Sweden.
David Marcham grew up in Ithaca riding the Lehigh Valley Railroad. As a youth and while studying at Cornell, he took photographs all over the south central region from the passenger service railroad. This collection provides an intimate record of small-town railroading that soon disappeared. More images will be added in 2022, but you can catch a presentation about the collection with the volunteer project coordinator and metadata author, Mark Charles, on September 10 at 7:30.
New Website for NYHeritage
There is now a lovely new version of www.nyheritage.org. There were very few changes to the content, but the underlying content management system (Drupal) had to be updated. Please feel free to fill out the feedback form, found at the top of the homepage, and let Claire know if you see any problems.
