MATTER OF PRIDE
It has been a long-standing tradition at Glenbard West to recognize ten students each month who have gone above and beyond to exemplify the West Way of Pride, Tradition, and Excellence. These students are recognized not for athletic or academic achievement, but solely based on their character. These are the students who put in the extra effort to help others, help our school, and help our community. Although we will not be able to celebrate these students in our traditional way of hosting a breakfast and award ceremony in their honor, we will recognize them with a Zoom Webinar on Friday, October 16, 2020.

We are proud to announce our First Quarter Matter of Pride recipients:

Isabelle Adduci, Senior

Drew Bennett, Freshman

Amelia Boeh, Senior

Griffin Hoeh, Freshman

Tasdique Khan, Senior

Ann Mitchell, Sophomore

Shahrbano Moosavi, Junior

Ezekiel Rhodes, Sophomore

Manha Syed, Sophomore

Marisol Vera, Freshman

Congratulations to all!

SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
School Counseling Curriculum Update

Seniors: Counselors have started sending transcripts to your colleges and are in the process of writing letters of recommendation. In order for your counselor to send an official transcript to a college, students must follow the steps in Naviance to add your colleges to your “Colleges I’m Applying To” and request an “Initial Transcript” at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. Senior students who need additional support working on their college applications or have specific questions regarding the college process should make an individual appointment with their School Counselor.
Juniors: School Counselors have developed a database of important college planning resources below for your reference. In addition, we will be planning a College Night (TBD) and individual planning sessions with you all. In the meantime, make sure you are keeping up your grades, preparing for the April SAT, and researching colleges by utilizing Naviance to attend college rep visits and explore college requirements.
College Representative Visits
Hundreds of college admissions representatives continue to meet with our students virtually. All visits will start between 12:30 and 1:50 (no Wednesdays), so you won’t miss any class time. You must register for the sessions in Naviance under “Colleges,” “Research Colleges,” and “College Visits.” The link to meet with the college rep will be available where you registered in “College Visits” shortly before the visit starts. There will also be a Glenbard School Counselor represented at each of the meetings.
SEMESTER GRADUATION MEETING
Students who have notified their counselor and will complete all graduation requirements by the end of first semester are invited to attend the Virtual Semester Grad Meeting on November 19th at 1:00 p.m. Early grads will have the opportunity to learn about the logistics of finishing mid-year, including participating in the annual graduation ceremony held in May. A representative from the Admissions Office at the College of DuPage will also be on hand to answer questions and assist student interested in transitioning to the College of DuPage for second semester.

Invitations (including a Zoom Link) will be sent out to all students who have informed their counselor of their intent to graduate mid-year. For questions about your student's eligibility for semester graduation, please contact your student's counselor. Contact Mr. Tad Keely in the School Counseling Office (ext. 2247) with any questions about this event.

DR. DAVID LARSON
SUPERINTENDENT
Extracurriculars providing valuable connection to school
When students have a strong sense of belonging and a connection to their school, they have a better educational experience and healthy emotional wellbeing. While our students are working remotely, they still have many opportunities to connect with their classmates and our staff outside of school.

Let’s look at examples of how students are connecting to school:

  • Senior Mentors/Link Crew hosted a virtual activities fair for the Class of 2024 to learn about all the clubs available. West clubs made videos about what their club does and how to get involved.
  • Forensics is in full swing, hosting informational meetings, auditions and a parent meeting all via Zoom.
  • Student Council was hard at work, creating a memorable Homecoming 2020 – Hawaiian Nights. Student Council hosted a fundraiser, drive-thru pep rally, and food drive to support the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.
  • Community-Based Transition Site Best Buddies are meeting. Students from the Northern and Southern Transition sites join each other virtually each month.
  • Operation One World reached out to World Relief on items they are in most need of and will ask the community to help support this organization throughout the year.
  • Glenbard Latino Organization has been meeting virtually and developing activities for Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • In lieu of performing at Glenbard West’s first football home game, marching band is hosting three performances in order for all students to practice proper social distancing. The performance will be recorded to show to the student body.
  • Virtual theatre rehearsals are under way. Virtual auditions and callbacks have been completed.
  • Students for Students organized a student-led virtual community chat about the COVID-19 pandemic and its challenges.

All of these activities and more are powerful ways for students to connect with classmates, coaches and club sponsors and make new friends. Students still have the opportunity to communicate, collaborate, create, embrace diversity, think critically and be self-empowered – the qualities within our Profile of a Graduate. Our students are learning and growing both in class and through activities beyond the school day.

Differently Wired: Raising Unconventional Children in a Conventional World

Behind every kid who is differently wired is likely to stand one or more frustrated, isolated, perhaps even burnt out-feeling adults. There are millions of us around the world. We’re everywhere, but often feel completely isolated raising our neurologically atypical kids. In this practical and actionable talk, Reber shares ten powerful “tilts,” a.k.a. practical ideas to help parents shift their thinking and actions in a way that will help them feel more confidence and peaceful about their everyday reality, create a stronger family dynamic, and give their extraordinary children what they need to thrive.

Deborah Reber, MA, is a parenting activist, New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, and speaker who moved her career in a more personal direction in 2016 when she founded TiLT Parenting, a top podcast, community, and educational resource for parents like her who are raising differently wired children. A regular contributor to Psychology Today and ADDitude Magazine, Debbie’s newest book is Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World (Workman Publishing, 2018). In November 2018, she spoke at TEDxAmsterdam, delivering a talk entitled Why the Future Will Be Differently Wired. After living abroad in the Netherlands for the past five years, Debbie, her husband, and 15-year-old son recently moved back to NYC.
