Included are resources for talking to students about COVID-19 and coping with stress. Moreover, links and information on FVSD's mental health and wellness resources, including CareSolace, Outreach Concern and our middle school counselors, are available. Happy Friday!
I want to begin by thanking our students, staff and families for a successful return to in-person learning for our hybrid students. These are some of the most challenging times of the pandemic, and it was heartwarming to see people back on our campuses. In addition, I want to thank all of our FVSDConnected students, staff and families, who continue to do such a great job, too. None of what we are going through is what we want it to be, and we all hope for a time when things return to normal, but there is also a lot to be grateful for and celebrate. We have reestablished our student Board recognitions, honored our Administrator of the Year, increased our promotion of Wellness Wednesdays, and can't wait to announce our Certificated and Classified Employees of the Year in the coming months.
In this issue, we are happy to: - Celebrate Courreges and Plavan Students
- Invite you to join us at an upcoming Parent Education Event on Cyber Awareness
- Honor Newland's Principal, Chris Mullin, as FVSD's Administrator of the Year!
- Reclassify our English Learners, and
- Highlight our Wellness Wednesday newsletters
Thank you for all that you continue to do to support teaching and learning!
Kindly, Mark Johnson, Ed.D.

SPOTLIGHT: FVSD Honors 2021 Administrator of the Year Chris Mullin
|
It is with great pride and excitement that we celebrate our 2021 Administrator of the Year, Chris Mullin, Principal of Newland Elementary School!!
One of the most endearing aspects of Mr. Mullin's personal story is that he has been a part of the FVSD Family for nearly forty years! He attended Moiola School from kindergarten through eighth grade, and he graduated from Fountain Valley High School, four years later. After a brief career as a wild-land firefighter with CDF and as a backcountry ranger with the US Forestry, Mr. Mullin earned his bachelor's at Montana State University. Although Chris began his teaching career in Montana, he returned to this amazing community in 2001, where he was hired to teach science and PE at Masuda Middle School. Mr. Mullin was an Assistant Principal at Fulton and was later promoted to Principal at Masuda. In 2013, Chris became principal at Newland Elementary School.
Chris embodies everything that is good about the FVSD Family. He is kind, compassionate, dedicated, humble, driven, and wants everyone - students, staff and parents - to be connected to one another. In addition, Chris believes strongly in shared leadership and collaboration, both of which have added to Newland's caring, rich and successful school culture. Because of the team's efforts, Newland has developed a tremendous reputation as a school of excellence, earning California Distinguished School, Gold Ribbon and a National Blue Ribbon awards over the last several years. Mr. Mullin is an wonderful leader and it is a privilege to honor him for his years of successful service.
Upon being recognized, Mr. Mullin stated, "As a native Fountain Valley student, I am so honored to receive this award. I have always let 'Do what is best for students' be my guiding light. I am truly blessed to work in a place that feels like family. Students, staff, and community, as well as all of those who work in the Fountain Valley School District, help to make this a dream job."
The FVSD Family is honored to celebrate Mr. Chris Mullin for his character, dedication to teaching and learning, ability to form strong relationships and ongoing leadership. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Mullin as our Administrator of the Year for 2021!

SPOTLIGHT: FVSD Celebrates Reclassification of EL Students
|
FVSD is excited to share that 73 of our students who qualify as English Learners are being reclassified as Fluent English Proficient. This represents a significant accomplishment, as many of these students enrolled in FVSD as Newcomers from different countries with limited English language skills. Achieving English proficiency typically takes between 4 and 7 years of schooling; however, FVSD has been very successful in helping students achieve English proficiency in less than 5 years. We are very proud of the hard work of these students, their teachers, and their families. Reclassifying as Fluent English Proficient will help open many doors for these students as they continue to progress through their education. FVSD will be honoring each student by presenting them with a Certificate of Achievement to recognize their outstanding accomplishment.
