Welcoming A New Year
Greetings!

Last year was not the year any of us expected, however as we look back on our first year in Philadelphia we are proud to have:

  • established a strong (and growing) board & board of advisors
  • created opportunities to "care actively"
  • raised & granted $300,000 to our partners for COVID relief
  • selected 14 nonprofit partners & granted $270,000

We look forward to the chance to connect you with our community in 2021 starting with the Meet Our Partners Virtual Event!
Meet Our Partners Virtual Event
Life Science Cares Philadelphia is starting the new year with additional nonprofit partners who were selected from a group of organizations nominated by our board of advisors. Each of these partners is doing outstanding work to reduce the impact of poverty in the communities they serve and is focused on one of three areas: education, economic sustainability or basic human survival.
We are excited to be able to share the resources of the life science community with our partners including grants of $220,000. More importantly, we look forward to increasing the impact of the grants through opportunities to engage our life science employees in meaningful volunteer activities that support the communities served by our partners.

Join us to Meet Our Partners and learn more about opportunities to "care actively" alongside other members of our life science community.

Volunteer To Launch Students Towards A Career In The Sciences
Issue area: Education | Youth
If you have a scientific background and would like to share information about what your job entails or teach a scientific concept, join with Breakthrough staff and college student Teaching Fellows to speak to 7th & 8th grade students (virtually) about a variety of science topics. This connection with science professionals will foster students’ curiosity about science beyond the classroom, and support their future Science Teacher Teaching Fellows with a unique professional development opportunity.

Volunteer opportunities are on several Saturdays from 11:30 to 12:15 now until May. Contact Life Science Cares to request additional information and be connected with Breakthrough Philadelphia.
Donate Books To Support A Social Enterprise
Issue area: Survival | Economic Sustainability
Social enterprises at Project HOME are small businesses designed to employ residents in a supportive, skill-building environment. Each business provides residents with an opportunity to build self-esteem through an encouraging community while providing income and job experience. The newest social enterprise venture, an online bookstore called Project HOME Books, is up and running again after COVID-19 forced it to pause. The project has already sold thousands of books, providing jobs for some of the residents. But they need more books! More information on how you could run a Project HOME Books drive for is available upon request.
Tax Return Preparation (Virtual or In Person)
Issue area: Economic Sustainability | Skills based volunteering
In partnership with the Campaign for Working Families, ACHIEVEability Connects provides free tax return preparation services to community members. This program brings hundreds of dollars back into the hands of lower and middle income individuals and families in the West Philadelphia community by helping them claim the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Caring and thorough volunteers are needed to help prepare the tax forms. No accounting background is required as all volunteers will be required to complete an online training module before working with clients.
