Greetings!

As the events of the past week unfolded, I am sure many of you shared my sense of outrage, followed by alternating waves of anger, despair and determination. This has – and continues to be – a very challenging time. But it is also a time when our shared commitment to justice and change demands that we act. We must continue our shared work to dismantle the structural racism and white supremacy that lies behind last week’s violence and to advocate for policy solutions that will build healthy communities for all.

Right now, we have an important opportunity to make a difference in Massachusetts by passing a critical climate justice bill that is currently sitting on Governor Baker's desk. Here are the details:

In the last days of the legislative session, the MA House and Senate finalized a landmark environmental justice and climate bill  — S.2995, An Act Creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy – and sent it to Governor Baker for his signature. The bill does some really important things, including:

  • Strengthening environmental justice protections for low-income communities and communities of color that have been disproportionately impacted by pollution.

  • Requiring Massachusetts to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 1990 levels by 2030, 75% by 2040 and reaching net zero by 2050.

The Governor has not indicated whether he will sign the bill – and if he doesn’t sign it in the next two days, the bill will die and all of the collaborative effort that's gone into drafting the bill and building support for it will be lost!

So, we need your help to convince the Governor to act now by signing the bill into law!

Here's how you can help:

1) Call Governor Baker's office at 617-725-4005

  • State your name and address

  • Ask him to sign S.2995, An Act Creating a Next Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy

  • Explain briefly why action on climate change and environmental justice matters to you personally!

2) Email Jeneczka.Roman@mapublichealth.org to let her know you called.

3) Encourage your friends and family to call, too!

Thank you all so much for all you do to advance health equity – including environmental justice – in our Commonwealth.
