Message From the Chapter President
Happy May to my EWI of Milwaukee Family!

In May:
  • We gathered for our first hybrid meeting. It was so wonderful seeing you all in-person and I look forward to the days of comfortable hugs (and I am not a hugger, so this means a lot!). I have missed you all! I enjoyed seeing all of our members and guests online joining in for the celebration from the comfort and safety of their homes too!
  •  We celebrated our EWISP recipients and their many accomplishments (check out the meeting photos on Facebook).
  •  Happy Mother’s Day to all those people and pet moms!
  •  In May we also recognize and celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month by paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success. The month of May was selected for two reasons: First, to commemorate the arrival of the first known Japanese immigrant to the U.S. on May 7, 1843; secondly, to honor the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 — the building of which up to 20,000 Chinese workers participated in. Our EWISP meeting guest speaker, Nzinga Acosta, reminded me that it’s never too late to find and fuel your passion.

When I started my professional career, I had no idea I would be where I am 10 years later, let alone at the same organization. During those ten years, I spent ample time re-evaluating my goals, my passions, and my future. Sometimes, the idea of change scared me. Sometimes the idea of meeting new people or taking on new tasks intimated me.

But at the end of the day, I steadily adjusted my sails to steer me in the direction that aligned with my passions. Sure, let’s be honest, I started working for YWCA SEW two days after I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, and I had so many wild ideas and dreams of where I was going to go. Throughout the years, my interests changed, and I was exposed to things I never knew I enjoyed. The one thing I did know was that I wanted to help people and make an impact in a meaningful way, whether it be through leadership, support roles or volunteerism.

Okay, so where am I going with this. Even at 32, ten years in with my company, I am still finding myself and where I best fit. I continuously ask myself if I love what I am doing, and if I don’t, why am I doing it. I’ve learned that opportunities to live a fulfilling life can show up in many ways, you just have to be willing to take a chance.

Meta House
These donations were taken to Meta House and were very appreciated!!

Our Home Foundation, Inc.” was born in Milwaukee, WI to create a place where women who struggled with a dependence to alcohol could be treated for their disease instead of being sent to jail. A home was established at 2843 W. State St. with room to help seven women recover from alcoholism. The house originally belonged to Mrs. Meta Orth and quickly became known among its residents as “Meta’s House.” The organization officially adopted the “Meta House” name in 2000. Since its establishment in the early sixties, Meta House has celebrated many remarkable accomplishments. A unique feature of Meta House is that the children of the women receiving treatment can have their children stay with them.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.”
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us?
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.
Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become?
