Happy June to each and every one of you! We hope everyone has been enjoying spring and continues to have fun with friends, family and dogs, and hope you are still finding enjoyable ways to be outdoors. The warming days mean fun for both you and your dog, so grab your dog (or a friend's) and take time to enjoy all the fun outdoor activities. Your dog is sure to appreciate any attention or exercise, no matter what, even if it's nose work at home, working on a treat puzzle or just a game of hide-and-go-seek in the house or outside! Remember to be sure their water bowl is full.

Happy Tails: Titan #504 (and Shadow #394)
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Today we have a heartfelt Happy Tails story about two adopted dogs, Shadow, who passed away too soon but was dearly loved until the end (and still is), and Titan, who is going strong and living happily-ever-after in his forever home. Cheryl and Bill adopted Titan (#504) in 2018 when he was about eight years old and Shadow (#394) in 2014 when she was about seven years old.
|
Shadow home from grooming.
|
They had always been interested in giving a home to an older dog and in 2014 went to meet Shadow as soon as they heard about her. Cheryl tells us it was love at first sight when Bill and Shadow met. Even GSRNE noticed it: In Shadow’s adoption notice Karen McCall tells us that, “Shadow seemed to choose them on the spot.” She instantly became one of the family and Cheryl still fondly remembers how Shadow would politely ask for more neck rubs with a tap of her paw. She wore bows after her beauty (grooming) appointments at PetSmart and was Cheryl and Bill’s joy. In every update GSRNE received, Cheryl and Bill spoke of their love for and adoration of Shadow and so were heartbroken when she passed away in 2015.
|
When they were ready, they worked with GSRNE again to find another senior dog and have now welcomed Titan into their home. They shower affection on this lucky dog as well. Titan is a barker, loves to swim in their backyard pool and follows Bill around to assist him with his chores, such as cleaning the pool. They get him to relax by playing cricket music for him when he gets too barky. They have also taken in Coco, a mix rescued from Puerto Rico by their son Paul, and she and Titan are great pals. Bill has breakfast early every morning with Titan and Cocoa. Both dogs often weasel an extra biscuit from him when he is on his way out to work, and then, frequently, from Cheryl as well.
|
Titan leads the two upstairs and together they bark to let her know they are still hungry. Titan also loves to play with balls and keeps them hidden all over the backyard. He is gentle with their grandchildren and will also sit quietly at the back door watching the yard while Cheryl works from home. He, too, is a joy to them, and they cannot recommend highly enough how wonderful it is to adopt a senior dog and give them love and affection throughout their senior years.

Adoption News - Rex #567
by: Karen McCall, President
|
When under 1 year old, Rex was rescued from a physically-abusive situation by a family who has a small dog. They said Rex would bark and hackle up at their dog, and he was also showing submissive urination, which was another problem to deal with. They said he was a good dog but needed to be rehomed, and we agreed after meeting him and doing an evaluation of his temperament and personality. We asked one of our approved adopters-in-waiting if she and her husband would give him a chance by fostering him. They introduced Rex, gradually, to their female Doberman, Raven, 2 years old, and their male mixed breed, Chance,10 years old. Things went well pretty quickly for Rex and Raven, and they have become great playmates.
|
Chance is blind and deaf, so it took him longer to accept Rex, but they are now comfortable together and give each other space. Going to training classes helped with teaching Rex better manners, and the trainer said he was a quick learner and seemed to enjoy the activities and new experiences. All this has helped Rex to fit beautifully into his new family; they tell us he's a very affectionate boy and loves having belly rubs almost as much as he loves playing fetch and chase games with Raven. They have officially adopted Rex, and he is now GSRNE dog # 567!

Take Me Home: Britta
by: GSRNE Staff
|
Britta is an adorable, happy, and affectionate 16-month-old female who, her foster mom describes as “a tiny ball of pure German Shepherd Dog energy”. Britta is a petite girl at only 40 lbs. We don’t expect her to be bigger than 50-55 lbs when fully grown. Britta was purchased as an 8-week-old puppy online and successfully lived with her owner and his mother for a period of time. When her owner started traveling for work and then moved in with his girlfriend, Britta reportedly no longer fit in with the family. Britta’s owner said she became jealous of his girlfriend, started soiling in the house, and was at times growling around his girlfriend. He called the local animal control officer to surrender her who thankfully called us. Other than a few initial crate soiling accidents when Britta was adjusting to her foster mom’s schedule, we have not seen any of this behavior. Britta’s personality has blossomed while in her foster mom’s care. Like many German Shepherds, she will alert bark when someone comes to the door or walks past the car.
|
Otherwise, everyone she meets is greeted with excited kisses and butt wiggles. At 16 months old, Britta is still very much a puppy with lots of energy to burn, and she will need continued training to learn how to better control her enthusiasm. She tends to be jumpy when excited and very sneaky around the dinner table! She is an extremely smart and attentive young lady who is crate trained and has already learned to sit, stay, wait, come, give paw, and down. She’s getting better at drop it, leave it, and heeling on a leash. She is very food motivated and sings, jumps, and twirls when she sees her foster mom head for the bag of kibble. She loves playing fetch and tug in the fenced yard as well as running after water from the garden hose. She is living with an older male GSD who has been very patient with her energy. Despite the fact that he is more than twice her size, she loves to rough house with him and eggs him on to chase her around the yard. She has met two other large male GSDs and a female chihuahua. She did great with the GSDs, but her energy was too high for the little dog, and we suspect this would hold true for a cat as well. We think she would do best with a larger male dog or as an only pet. She has also happily met and played with children.
|
While running fast and furious in the fenced yard, her foster mom noticed that she often keeps both her back legs together in a rabbit-hop fashion. We had Britta’s vet evaluate her,and we have determined that she does have hip dysplasia. She has been started on carprofen, a fish oil capsule, and a joint chew daily as well as weekly physical therapy sessions to build up her muscles. She is otherwise a healthy girl who was a star patient at the vet’s office. Britta will need daily exercise, avoiding activities with quick starts and stops or a lot of jumping, to keep her hips as healthy as possible. She will also need to maintain a trim weight. Britta will be a wonderful dog for the person or family willing to put the time and energy into her training and maintaining her hip health.

Foster Homes Needed!!
If you love the breed and want to help, consider fostering. GSRNE pays all the expenses. You provide the love and care. We receive several hundred calls for help every year from Shelters and Owners looking to place a dog with GSRNE. We cannot help them all but we need Foster Homes to help those that we can. Some of our Foster Homes become so attached to their Foster Dog that they become the dog's Forever Home. We love every happy ending but that also means we need a new Foster Home for the next dog in need. To learn more about fostering, please visit www.gsrne.org/foster/
When you look at the wonderful dogs available for adoption and you read the Happy Tails in our Newsletter and online, remember that GSRNE was able to help these dogs because of our Foster Homes.
Fostering Basics
A fence is required. Dogs are at the greatest risk of escape when they are first introduced to a new location. Children living in the home need to be age 10 or older.
Frequently Asked Questions
1.What does the foster home do?
You provide a safe and stable environment for the foster dog until he or she finds a forever home. You take care of your foster dog like you would your own dog - play, exercise, grooming and basic manners training. You also provide periodic reports to GSRNE about the dog's progress, personality, likes & dislikes so that GSRNE can find the right match for him or her.
2. How do I know if the foster dog will be a good fit for me and my family?
We work with you to determine what general type of dog will adapt to your household for a successful fostering experience for you & the rescue dog. We also provide strong support for you & help is only a phone call away.
3. How much does it cost to foster a GSD for GSRNE?
There is no cost to the foster home. GSRNE reimburses you for the foster dog's food and pays for all authorized vet care. In addition, GSRNE loans you a crate, feeding and water dishes, bedding, brushes, collars, leashes, & of course, toys!
