UF Unstoppable Minds Podcast Features
Dr. Sherrilene Classen's Work on Empowering Older Adults to Keep their Independence
Empowering older adults to keep their independence through transportation activities has been one of the primary research efforts of Dr. Sherrilene Classen throughout her career. As autonomous vehicles (AV) and technologies begin to operate on streets, getting older adults to feel comfortable with this technology will be vital to their independence and safety. Listen to Dr. Classen on Episode 4 of the Unstoppable minds Podcast.
This project focuses on the routes that children take as they walk from their homes to school.
FDOT FINAL REPORT: I-STREET Initiative - Evaluation of Intelligent School Zone Beacon and Vehicle-Cyclist Detection & Warning System
Dr. Eakta Jain of the UF Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering and Dr. Siva Srinivasan of the UF Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering led an FDOT-funded project that evaluated the performance of a smartphone-based app which alerts drivers when they exceed the speed limit in a school zone. The app also alerts drivers when bicyclists who have the app are in the area. Read more about the study and findings here.
Transportation structures in Florida use steel-reinforced concrete but they must be protected to prevent corrosion.
FDOT FINAL REPORT: Testing Methods to Assess the Durability of Concrete Permeability Reducing Admixtures
Dr. Kyle Riding of the UF Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering led an FDOT-funded research project that evaluated protocols to test the effectiveness of permeability-reducing admixtures (PRAs) and then created a testing procedure specific to Florida environmental conditions. Read more about the study and findings here.
