Lake Superior State University has cancelled its annual fall homecoming, Great Lake State Weekend, out of an abundance of caution due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, while continuing to hold classes face-to-face during the semester.
"Every fall, we look forward to welcoming our alumni and friends back to campus to celebrate alumni accomplishments, cheer our Laker hockey team, highlight our signature programs and other majors, and recognize more points of pride. We also enjoy inducting a new class into our Athletic Hall of Fame every other year, including 2020. While LSSU is teaching in-person this term, we feel it's in the best interests of our campus, the community, and the larger world during the coronavirus challenges to call off this year's event," said Thomas Coates, executive director of the LSSU Foundation and chair of the festivities. For the fourth time in 15 years, Lake Superior State University's Fisheries and Wildlife Club earned the Outstanding Student Subunit Award from the American Fisheries Society (AFS). LSSU was singled out for top honors from among approximately 80 collegiate counterparts in North America.
"The award recognizes outstanding professionalism, active resource protection, and enhancement programs, as well as a strong commitment to the mission of the society," AFS President Scott A. Bonar wrote in an email. "The LSSU subunit has been selected in recognition of their extensive activities and programs in many areas." Read more.
Lake Superior State University again ranks as one of the best institutions in higher education, according to U.S. News & World Report . The 2021 college rankings singled out LSSU in three categories that it had also made in 2020: best regional colleges in the Midwest; top public schools, regional colleges, in the Midwest; and best undergraduate engineering programs nationwide. Lake Superior State University received a $14,850 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to host a campus and community program called the "NEA Big Read." The NEA Big Read offers a range of titles to choose from for collective study, and the LSSU family and neighbors will peruse Louise Erdrich's 2012 prize-winning novel, The Round House , a suspense tale set on the Ojibwe reservation of North Dakota. LSSU's Big Read also includes several related features: a keynote speaker, panel discussion, documentary film screening, and gallery exhibit, all on overlapping themes. Read more.

The Men's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will delay the start of its 2020-21 season, WCHA Men's League Commissioner Bill Robertson announced earlier this month.
"We continue to engage in thorough evaluation and discussion of various options for safely opening the 2020-21 season, both nationally and within the WCHA, as the health and safety of everyone associated with our league is our top priority." Robertson said. "There was a strong desire to open the season as scheduled on October 3, but that is not possible given the realities we are facing. While we are still finalizing plans for our season at this point, we owe it to our student- athletes, coaches, officials and great fans to acknowledge the fact we will not begin play on time."

WRAPPING IT UP
I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Laker E-ffect. Ryan Sigmon, from our office, did another outstanding job compiling everything from alumni news to some special accomplishments by our students. From my review, I noticed a Lake State classmate retiring which gave me another realization that I have been around here for a long time and this is a great place to live and learn.
To reinforce that thought, last night I attended a campus and community event in Shouldice Library referenced above called the NEA Big Read focused on the book entitled "The Round House." The event featured three local panelists with experiences assisting victims and families cope with domestic violence on Native American reservations. Being surrounded by the Native American culture this is an important issue for us to understand and we appreciate the efforts by those organizing this initiative.
We are very disappointed about not welcoming alumni and friends to campus for Great Lake State Weekend this fall. However, the "Get Here, Stay Here" approach to protect and provide our students a safe and productive environment has been working so far. The goal is to remain diligent. Our current disappointment is tempered by celebrating the accomplishments of our Alumni Award Recipients and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees until we can safely gather and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow Lakers.
