Happy to be Back on Campus
Students and staff are very happy to be back on campus! Welcome back tables were outside buildings 1300, 500, and 400 on Feb 22 and 23 and staffed by deans, faculty, staff, PTK students, and student employees.

Students were greeted with some snacks and SCC swag.

Other students expressed their joy in the classroom saying:
"I’ve really appreciated the flexibility of going to class from home for what I already have going on in my life and I was really anxious about going into school after all this time. A few of us waited in the hall and chatted a little bit before class started. It really broke the ice. I found the interaction between the students doing our classwork pretty thought provoking which has really been missing. I loved being able to throw my hand in the air and getting called on while the question is still fresh in my brain and getting the clarification I needed to help things stick. Also getting to see our professor in action really helped turn her into a person, compared to Zoom classes. I heard she was actually really awesome, and I finally got to see
it for myself." -Sally Griffieth

"COVID has taken so much from us - where do I even start. One thing that it has taken from me that I got a piece of back on this last Monday night is human connection. The ability to be in a room with my classmates, my future colleagues. It seems so small, however, being in the classroom gave me the motivation, the confidence, the REALNESS of being together in the classroom. We are in the business of helping. We need to be on our toes. We need to practice, practice, practice. We can do that on zoom and on the phone,
however, that's like have a great fancy dinner without utensils and having to drink from one of those paper cones. Body language, looking at someone to see if maybe I'm doing something good or if I need to work on that a bit. You CAN get all of that from the connection that comes from being in the classroom. I am SO grateful I was able to have that experience with my classmates and Dr Cabrera. 10/15 - Would HIGHLY recommend!" ~ Jenn Desaulniers
Research Corner
As a new, regular feature of the Solano CARES newsletter, the Research Corner will feature data reflecting different aspects of institutional effectiveness. Topics may include updates on our progress in meeting the goals of district-wide plans; reporting significant changes in areas such as enrollment and funding metrics; sharing the results of campus-wide surveys; and responding to questions from readers. Our goal is to keep research and planning at the heart of district conversations and decision making.

For this first column, we want to introduce some of the data tools available for any member of the campus community or general public to view student success data. The Chancellor’s Office MIS DataMart provides data on a wide range of metrics. These include not only student outcomes data, but also areas such as enrollments, demographics, student services utilization, class types and schedules, and more. You can search by college or view state-wide data, by semester or academic year. To track year-by-year progress in student outcomes and other metrics, another great tool is the Student Success Metrics Dashboard, which displays results as multi-year graphs. Regional and state-wide searches offer context and comparison for local results.

You can find links to these tools and others on the Research and Planning webpage. We invite you to explore. For more data tools and information about the research office, join our Flex presentation on March 17th. Hope to see you there!
Construction Projects Update
Over the past two years, design and construction projects have continued. The pandemic meant that fewer people have been on campus and this presented an opportunity to advance projects.

Projects currently in construction include:
Pedestrian & vehicle wayfinding signs to help students and campus visitors "find their way" to specific buildings, parking locations for significant places, like the pool or library/learning resource center. Although most signs have been installed, there are still a few to install.
IT infrastructure improvements is a group of technology projects intended to provide necessary network, communication systems, desktop services and equipment improvements in support of instructional, student support and office spaces. We expect that while much of this is hidden in walls and ceilings, you will come across new technology in classrooms, collaboration spaces and in offices and find that wifi and cell reception are better as you move about the campus.
Completed Projects include:

Building exterior "refresh" is something we hope you'll notices when you come to campus and see the exterior paint colors to help everyone find entrances to buildings and highlight new, large building numbers. The project also cleaned and repainted most exterior surfaces of the buildings, giving the entire campus a "facelift."
Mailroom and graphics modernization consisted of renovating two existing spaces in Building 300 to allow for conversion into our new mailroom and graphics services space.
Early college high school portables are two new modular classrooms that will be used long-term on the Fairfield campus. This space will support both the Early College High School program and the Solano County Office of Education, providing swing space for future bond projects over the next 10-15 years.
Baseball and soccer bleachers have been replaced on the Fairfield campus to ensure full accessibility for our sports fields. The project included removal and replacement of the existing bleachers at these fields, which brings it into ADA-compliance.
Building 1800B exterior roof canopy consisted of replacing a failing roof structure where there was welding equipment and various pieces of machinery for students to use. The construction consists of a new steel frame, outdoor cover and other site improvements. This space will now be safer for students in this program.
Campus site improvements and small projects include:

  • Fairfield campus baseball and softball clubhouse replacements
  • Fairfield building 300 modernization/renovation
  • Fairfield campus Early Learning Center expansion
  • Vacaville Aeronautics Nut Tree facility improvements

Planning Grant for Low-Cost Housing Options
On September 23, 2021, Governor Newsom signed SB 169, the higher education budget trailer bill. SB 169 includes the creation of a new, three-year state student housing program – the Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program (“Program”) – designed to provide one-time grants for the construction of student housing or for the acquisition and renovation of commercial properties into student housing for the purpose of providing affordable, low-cost housing options for students enrolled in public postsecondary educational institutions in the State, including community colleges. SB 169 defines “student housing project” to mean one or more housing facilities to be occupied by students of one or more campuses, including, but not limited to, dining, academic, and student support service spaces, basic needs centers, student healthcare services, and other necessary and usual attendant and related facilities and equipment.

SCC received a planning grant to further explore affordable student housing and co-housing, an innovative approach to creating community for students and senior citizens.

Wellness Center Now Open
The Wellness Center is now open to provide culturally responsive services, in a safe place, where people can “chill”—yes, relax, play games, draw, share poems, and do so much more! We will offer support groups, co-facilitated by our very own well-trained alumni and student, and host presentations and share strategies that all serve to help us be well.

We have two Wellness Center Leads. They are both trained in Human
Services, which means they are equipped with specific knowledge and skills to create alliances and facilitate change, run groups, and case manage a diverse population. These students learned in a supportive, practice-oriented environment and are eager to serve at the Wellness Center.
Abigail “Abby” Bayquen is a proud first generation Filipino-American, U.S. military child who grew up in Japan. She is a Solano College 2021 Human Services graduate, and soon will get her AA-T in Criminal Justice. She serves as a Student Representative for the National
Organization of Human Services Board of Directors, enjoys volunteering her time, and sleeping. She also enjoys singing and shopping.
Mikeyan Murray’s pronouns are she/her and is getting ready to graduate in the Fall of 2022 with her Human Service Associate’s degree! Her life’s purpose is to go out into the community and be a bright shining light in someone else’s life. Once she discovered her purpose at a young age was to help others, she decided to use
that to the best of her ability and continue to work in
environments with the youth/young adults as a Youth Mentor in order to be a role model for them and help with not only their
academic needs, but also personal needs. An individual’s race, sexuality, abilities, nor any physical feature could stop her from being a support to another

The Wellness Center is in building 1400 at the Fairfield campus. The plan is to make the Wellness Center available to everyone this semester, so look out for more details to come soon. Stay safe and be well!
Grab Lunch in the Cafeteria
Starting today, March 14, lunch will be available in the cafeteria for students and staff. It is being supplied by Fairfield Suisun Unified School District from 12:10 - 12:45 pm for $4.00 (cash only).
