New Year's Resolutions
Greetings Fellow Toastmasters,
Have you thought of a New Year's resolution? Do you make a resolution every year?
I wonder what will motivate me this year. I know that I must set a goal that is reasonable and specific and hold myself accountable. I will start by writing down all the resolutions that I make and then determine my goals.
It would be so much easier to resolve that I wish for all of you to have a wonderful and joyous Happy New Year.
For me, I resolve that I will attend my Toastmasters meeting twice a month, work harder and spend more time preparing my speeches. I will complete the level in Pathways that I am working on before June 30, 2023.
My hope is that you will not only make a resolution for your personal life but also for Toastmasters. What will you resolve to accomplish this year?
Thank you for your support.

Happy New Year!
Fellow Toastmasters,
As we pass the midpoint of our Toastmasters year, or what is referred to as "midfield" in football with a new set of downs, we are coming to another round or level of our speech contests, the Area contest. It's an opportunity to test your skills against other Toastmasters. Here are some important reminders.
To compete you must be a member in good standing of a club in good standing.
Competition begins with your club contest or being appointed as your club's representative and continues through the Area, Division, and District events. Winners of the District level International Speech Contest proceed to the region quarterfinal level. Following the region quarterfinals, winners advance to the semifinals for a chance to take part in the World Championship of Public Speaking
The International Contest will challenge our more experienced Toastmasters who have completed level two in Pathways or earned a DTM.
To develop our newer or creative Toastmasters we offer a Tall Tales speech competition which has no speech level requirements to compete.
If you have questions, please reach out to me.

Anyone Else But Me!
When we make the Toastmasters promise we agree to lead when called upon to do so. Yet when actually called upon we say, "I’m not ready," "I don’t have time," "I’m not qualified,” "Anyone else but me!"
What we really mean is “I’m scared.” You know what? Most leaders are scared. In fact, it is healthy to be a little scared. Fear can push us to greater heights.
Leaders may be born or made but are always in the right place at the right time. If you are being called on it is because someone sees in you a particular skill, ability or temperament that is suited to the task. All we are afraid of is the unknown or failure.
Trust that person’s insight, trust you will step up to the challenge and become far more than you imagined. Facing that fear allows us the freedom to become a true leader, planting the very same seed in others.
Minimizing barriers, providing vision and purpose, support and guidance, empowering and rewarding, maximizing yours and others potential and achievement.
If not you then who? Who else but you!

Division E
Empire Statesmen Toastmasters Club has had a busy and exciting first half of the year.
Like other clubs, we have gone to a hybrid model of in-person meetings that are also available on Zoom. This has allowed us to have members in Florida and Georgia. We have had guests from as far away as Australia.
Our meetings now consist of 15-20 members attending in person and a handful on Zoom. New members consistently tell us they joined because of our strong in-person meeting participation.
New members have been welcomed into participating on event committees such as our open house and Halloween party committees. We believe that bringing members together to plan events builds stronger bonds and allows new members to connect with the club quickly.
Two new members also stepped up in July to join our Executive Committee. Bringing them into the EC allows them to develop their leadership skills and lets them know we are serious about their growth. We have found that members who actively participate in leadership are more committed members and stay in the club longer.
Empire Statesmen's Meetings are every Thursday night from 6:30-8:30 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liverpool, NY.
As a club we have learned the importance of allowing members to drive changes and improvements where they see the need. A small group of members developed the hybrid plan on their own time. Their learning and extra efforts made the transition to hybrid relatively seamless. We are all grateful for their efforts and foresight.

Dear Patty
Dear Patty,
As a new toastmaster, I am excited to move along in my path. I completed my “Ice Breaker”, but I do not know what to do next nor does my club officers. Please explain the next activity for me.
Move-along-Mickey
____
Dear Move-along-Mickey,
You are not alone. Many people forget what to do next to ensure that they receive credit for completing any project. As you finish more projects, a routine develops which can be summarized here:
- Compete “Assess Your Skills – Before”
- Read the project materials
- Prepare the speech for the project
- Give the required speech or speeches for the project
- Complete “Assess Your Skills – After”
- Submit your answers then move to next project
As you can see, no matter what path nor what level an individual currently finds themselves completing, the next step remains the same…
Complete the “Assess Your Skills – After” for the path and level that you just completed. It asks the same five questions that you were given when you first opened the project.
Submit your answers. A comparison chart which displays both your “Assess Your Skills – Before” and “Assess Your Skills – After” answers appears immediately once you submit your answers. The next screen congratulates you for completing the project.
Close that project by hitting the ‘X’ on the tab on the top of the screen.
Return to the level projects that you last opened and begin the next project that does not have a check by the computer screen (looks like this).
|
|
Do the same thing for the next project:
- Complete “Assess Your Skills – Before”
- Read the project materials
- Prepare the speech for the project
- Give the required speech or speeches for the project
- Complete “Assess Your Skills – After”
- Submit your answers
Begin the next project
As you can see Pathways is just a ‘complete and repeat’ process for levels 1 and 2. On level 3, electives appear. Be sure that you have a computer with a check, like this for the number of required electives.
|
|
Just do this each time you give a speech, and you will have completed everything for a project.
Next month, I’ll review what Base Camp Managers will do to give credit to their club.
Best of success,
Pathways Patty
