Giving the gift of Scouting
This has been an unexpectedly crazy year and our leaders and volunteers have truly adapted their programs virtually and safely by socially distancing. Thank you for continuing to give your unit’s scouts, the gift of Scouting! Just look at what you, our amazing leaders and volunteers, are able to do for our youth. Virtual merit badge classes were offered, virtual camp-in were successful and a whole virtual campsite was created with tons of activities, challenges and resources. It’s been challenging; but you’ve stayed the course. What a tremendous example you are. Words like loyal, helpful, cheerful and brave come to mind. Please continue to adapt your programs and keep your scouts advancing rank. Continue to recruit, invite and welcome new scouts as other families are looking to our program to keep their youth engaged during this time. Hoping soon, that things will get back to at least semi-normal. I know that our scouts are looking forward to rekindled friendships, new adventures, getting outside and camping!
Mount Baker Council’s Membership Committee had been meeting and are putting together new ideas and strategies for recruiting year round. We will be starting off 2021 with our Lego (type) Derby on January 16! We are so excited to try this new racing competition and recognize our scouts and leaders who recruited just one new scout (recording it back in November). These scouters will receive a Lego type base plate with wheels and will be able to create a unique race car adding Lego type bricks of their own. The race will be streamed live-check it out!
Keep doing what you are doing to keep giving the gift of scouting to our youth. As we know that Scouting is the gift that keeps on giving as our first year Lions ultimately become Eagle Scouts!

Scouting at Home Resources and New Webinars |
The Scouting @ Home Committee has been hard at work creating fun activities and ideas to help our Scouts “Scout On”. The Mount Baker Council website has many resources to help your unit be successful.
Check out the Monthly Scouting @ Home Themes for recommended monthly themes. From monthly meeting resources to awards and merit badges, there are many ideas and opportunities for scouts of all ages. Visit Scouting@Home Themes to spice up your calendar.
Beginning in December, we will be having weekly instructional webinars called “Scout Bytes”. Each webinar will be on Wednesdays at 5:00pm and will be approximately 15 minutes long. Most of these webinars will be recorded and uploaded to the Mount Baker Council website for viewing at a later time if you aren’t able to make the scheduled call. We hope you are able to attend these informative webinars to help our youth Scout @ Home. Here is a schedule for the next 5 webinars:

Family Camping at Fire Mountain |
In Council unit families have the opportunity to camp at a Fire Mountain campsite for FREE through the end of the year.
At this time Fire Mountain Scout Camp is only allowing single family campsite reservations.
Campsites at Fire Mountain boast two types of shelters:
- Adirondack Cabins have 3 walls, a canvas door, a window (in most models) and 4 sets of bunk beds, sleeping 8 individuals with plenty of space.
- Steel-roofed Tents – “stents” – are smaller structures built on a classic wall tent footprint. They have 3 walls, a canvas door, a window and 1 or 2 sets of bunks, sleeping 2 or 4 individuals.
Security deposit still required.

Come spend an exciting and memorable weekend in the snow with us! Learn how to build a snow structure and stay warm. Learn to identify dangerous avalanche conditions and how to avoid them. Learn basic winter survival skills and first aid. The seminar
addresses all aspects of winter camping and outdoor travel in a condensed classroom session that assumes basic backpacking knowledge and builds on that for a fun and safe experience in the Winter.

Summit Bechtel Reserve Debuts Orion Project |
|
Do you know a group of Scouts who would like to visit the Summit Bechtel Reserve in July 2021? If so, we have just opened programming during July 18 to July 31 and have combined some of our best programs to create a new adventure.
The adventure is called the Orion Project. As a 7-day/6-night experience, Orion will include opportunities for BMX, skateboarding, mountain biking, zip lines, canopy tours, challenge courses, climbing, shooting sports, whitewater rafting, fellowship with Scouts from across the nation, and much more.
Orion will be open to ALL Scouts BSA youth. It will be held during the following weeks:
Orion I – July 18 to July 24, 2021
Orion II – July 25 to July 31, 2021

Reminder: High-Adventure Base COVID-19 Surcharge |
Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the BSA is notifying all registrants scheduled to attend one of the national High-Adventure bases of a one-time COVID-19 surcharge fee of $50 per participant. This fee will offset the additional costs associated with operating High-Adventure Bases in accordance with CDC, state and local guidelines and precautionary measures intended to keep all participants safe.
This surcharge is necessary because the additional expenses associated with addressing COVID-19 were not accounted for when the 2021 High-Adventure Base fees were set 12-18 months ago. We are notifying participants now so that you have a few months’ notice before the charge is applied.
Each High-Adventure Base will include this fee in registrants’ final payment invoice.
Please note, this surcharge will be waived for youth participants under the age of 17 in instances of Philmont Family Adventure Camping or Philmont Training Center programs.

For over 100 years, the Order of the Arrow (OA), Scouting’s national honor society, has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live by these ideals as well, and advances the OA’s purpose of promoting responsible outdoor adventure, developing young leaders, and crystallizing the Scout habit of helpfulness into lifelong leadership in cheerful service to others. The OA emphasizes service to the unit—Arrowmen give back to their troops through the leadership skills and values of service learned through the Order.
The Mount Baker Council BSA is served by the OA’s Sikhs Mox Lamonti Lodge #338, which marks its 25th anniversary as a lodge this year. In a typical year, Lodge members contribute thousands of hours of service at Fire Mountain Scout Camp and in their communities across the Mount Baker Council, including organizing district camporees; visiting units across the Council to promote camping; and convening for fun-filled gatherings, high adventure, and leadership development training at the council, regional, and national levels.
Troops, Ships, and Posts: We look forward to visiting you in 2021, including to support your units’ camping programs and to conduct OA elections. We will be contacting your units in early 2021 to arrange these visits.

In this season of gratitude, service and giving, I’m reflecting on the many things I am thankful for in this Boy Scouts of America, our Council, our members and our supporters.
First, thank you to all the leaders, volunteers and parents who have given their time and energy to helping young people have once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Your mentorship and support helps shape and define the experiences of our participants and without you, our program wouldn’t exist. Through your efforts, young people develop character, learn leadership and develop skills they will use for a lifetime.
Next, I’d like to thank all the friends of Scouting who have given of their resources throughout the year. Whether supporting our Council or supporting those impacted by the pandemic this year, you contributions have helped Scouting programs thrive, often during times of tremendous difficulty for our families. Your gifts provide Scouts with supplies and opportunities they would otherwise go without.
Finally, thank you to all our members, alumni, staff, volunteers and friends who live the values of the Scout Oath and Law everyday. At this time of year, service and kindness are popular topics, but those values are dear to us year-round and I see countless examples of them in action from this community. That is the impact of our movement. Thank you for making our world a better place to live. This is a wonderful community to be a part of and you’ve given me so much to be thankful for.
I hope that everyone had the opportunity to share the Thanksgiving holiday even if it was virtually.

Council Shoulder Patch Campaign |
The Nysether Family Foundation, and Mark and Brad Nysether are generously providing a challenge grant opportunity of $50,000. In order to receive the funds, we need to raise $50K by December 31, 2020.
This is your chance to help the Mount Baker Council in a tough financial year to balance the budget by year-end and get a great set of Merit Badged Themed patches in the process.

Shooting Sports Patch Set |
The Shooting Sports committee is selling a six patch set that will consist of a center pentagon shaped patch with five CSP’s that will encircle the center patch.
One CSP design will be introduced each year.
Each year there will be 75 CSP’s with a black border and 35 Special addition CSPs with a gold border.
There will be no limit on the number of the center Shooting Sports Pentagon patch.
Proceeds benefit the Mount Baker Council Shooting Sports Program.

New COVID Training Policy
If we are not in a phase that can facilitate the in-person training 30 days before the in-person training event (Phase 2: 5 people total; Phase 3: 10 people total; Phase 4: 50 total) which includes staff, the Council will cancel the event.
|

All Council Trainings for 2020 have been cancelled or Postponed until 2021 due to local and State Health guidelines and restrictions due to Covid.
In the meantime, every Scout still needs a Trained Leader. What can you do? Re-Take your Youth Protection Training…especially if it is dated prior to 2020. Take on-line courses specific to your leader position that you will have in your unit, district, or Council during 2021.
