Share the Plate
Share Your Support with Share the Plate
It’s the High Holidays!
Our September 2021 Share the Plate community partner is the Anti-Defamation League of Texas. ADL is a leading anti-hate organization, founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry. Today, ADL is the first call when acts of antisemitism occur, and continues to fight all forms of hate. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.

ADL was chosen as our partner specifically for September, as Jews across the world observe the High Holidays. In addition, this donation is in recognition of our friendship and shared sacred space with Shir Ami. We stand united with them in fighting antisemitism.

Go to the Donate link on the Live Oak website’s home page. Use the drop down menu to designate your donation for “Share the Plate”. In addition to those designated donations, half of all undesignated gifts in September will go to the fund.

Special Notices
Drive Up Water Communion, September 19
On Sunday, September 19, our water communion ritual continues after the service. Please come by after the service concludes, from about 10:30-12:30, to add water from your summer adventures (could be from a lake, ocean ... or your kitchen faucet!) and to pick up a tiny commemorative bottle containing water from our last in-person water ceremony. We'll also have a banner for you (children included) to write a blessing for Live Oak. This banner will hang inside Live Oak until we are able to safely return to our building's sanctuary.

Board Meeting Sunday
The Board of Trustees will be conducting an open meeting this Sunday, September 19th at 1pm via Zoom. Topics to be discussed will include an updated mission statement and other regular business. The agenda can be found here. All are welcome to attend.

Thank You to Willing Workers Who Helped Get Live Oak Ready for Multi-platform Church!
On Saturday, Sept. 11, members of Live Oak gathered to help get our grounds and tech ready for the Sept. 19 debut of Multi-Platform/Outdoor Church. They dealt with poison ivy, moved picnic tables, strung up shade tarps, raked the path to smooth out the erosion, ran cable for our livestream feed, and more. Thank you, Joel Bercu, Mike Schultz, Ray McPherson, Becky McPherson, Sue Buckley, Linda McCullough, Liz Waters, Andrew Leroy Tucker, and Tim Stryker, and an additional thank you to C.T. Goss and Joel Bercu who have been meeting up at Live Oak multiple times to get sound and livestreaming prepared.
Carrying the Flame - Joel Bercu, Stephani Bercu and Alyssa Goss
In our new member ceremonies, we end by explaining that at Live Oak, it is important that what happens here does NOT stay here. It's important that we do justice work together, and it's also important that each of us carry our UU values out into our own particular spheres of influence.

This past week, three of our members notably did that:

JOEL and STEPHANI BERCU testified at the Leander ISD School Board meeting - Joel testified about the power and efficacy of masks, and Stephani spoke to the lack of decorum and respect exhibited by much of the crowd.

ALYSSA GOSS was presented with an award by the People's Community Clinic, for her work setting up so many people for vaccination appointments during the early roll-out in the spring.

Know of a Live Oak member who is carrying the flame out into the wider community? Let me know! minister@liveoakuu.org

HELP DISTRIBUTE FOOD TO OUR NEIGHBORS
Live Oak Church will be distributing food to our neighbors at Fresh Food Friday and need volunteers to help.

Friday, September 17 @ 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Live Oak parking lot. This is when we distribute the food to our neighbors. Volunteers are needed to set up, direct people to the drive through area, collect client information, and place food in the client’s trunk. You do not need to remain the entire 2 & 1/2 hours.

HCCM has asked for 7 people for each activity. We are asking you to please let us know if you will be able to participate in either activity, so we know if we have enough or too many people.

To RSVP or for any questions please contact Donna Durbin at: HCCM@liveoakuu.org
An Invitation to an Ordination!
We have a new minister in our ranks! LOUU member Lee Legault is being ordained and you’re invited.
Lee Legault will be ordained into the UU ministry on Saturday, Sept 18 from 2-4 pm. Everyone at LOUU is warmly invited to attend via a link that will be posted. Due to Covid, there will only be a small in-person service for those needed in the ceremony, but please watch the ceremony online to join in Lee’s well-wishes.
