Dear Cathedral,

When John the Baptist warned people that the Messiah was coming, they asked him what they should do to prepare. This is what he said: Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise. (Luke 3:11)

How strange! John did not tell them to pray. He told them to give. Jesus was similar. He spoke more about giving than he spoke about praying. Thus, when we consider the spiritual life, giving is more important than praying. Giving is essential.

The new Cathedral Quarterly focuses on the art and practice of giving. It touches upon the reasons why we give, the spiritual fulfillment that is generated from giving and the miracle of the church itself. Look for it in your mailbox or read it on our website. The issue features an article from my new book, which will be published in January, followed by a brilliant piece from the Rev. Dr. Linda Privitera, some words of wisdom from the Rev. Dr. John Claypool, one of the most brilliant Episcopal authors I know, and concludes with words from theologian Richard Foster on the art of simplicity.

Do not be overwhelmed by the concept of giving. There should be no shame or guilt associated with giving. Giving is a joyful act, a miraculous act that can change the world. Open this Quarterly to explore its mysteries.

In Christ’s love,
Kate+

A World of Quilts art exhibit opens Sunday
Taliaferro Hall at St. John’s cathedral will be transformed into A WORLD OF QUILTS, an exhibition of quilts by Jacque Huber opening on September 19, 2021, and running through the end of October.

World of Quilts
All quilts are for sale. Contact the Cathedral Bookstore and Gift Shop for information.

The visitor’s eyes will be dazzled by the more than twenty hand-pieced quilts in the exhibition. Surrounded by blazing colors, subdued and subtle designs, traditional and modern patterns, and ingenious quilting, they will be delighted by Jacque’s (a trained engineer and business executive) mastery of an art form that has deep ties to American church-women in 19th and 20th century America but is now available to the wider world of contemporary art.

Why Pledge?
A pledge is a commitment, made after deliberate and prayerful consideration, to contribute a specific amount of money to the parish community. It is a reflection of your gratitude for the abundant blessings God has given you.
Pledging to give on a regular basis enables the Vestry to make realistic budget projections for the coming calendar year. We hope that all households will make a stewardship pledge, even if it is only a small amount per week, as an expression of an ongoing commitment to St. John's Cathedral.

In summary, here are three reasons why pledges are key to the health of our Cathedral:
  • Pledges are a way to include Cathedral members in the mission of St. John's Cathedral.
  • Pledges help us plan and budget for the future.
  • Pledges help to fund Cathedral operations.

Diocese of Florida Prayer for the Election of Our Bishop
Almighty God, giver of every good gift, we pray that you would look graciously upon the Diocese of Florida, and so guide the minds and hearts of the Nominating Committee as they prayerfully select candidates for the election of the next bishop of this diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries: Guide also the minds and hearts of the candidates who will come before the Nominating Committee, that this process will be a time of discernment and growth in their lives and ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
