EllisDon clinic to run May 19 to 26
EllisDon has announced details of its COVID-19 Vaccination Pop-Up Clinic, set to launch at the firm’s Mississauga headquarters office building at 1004 Middlegate Rd. unit 1000 on May 19.
The clinic will be presented in partnership with Flynn, Modern Niagara and Central Ontario Building Trades and vaccinations will be by appointment only.
The clinic will be open to all EllisDon and partner employees, workers and their families within the same household who are 18 years of age and older who work, live or frequent the region of Peel.The vaccination clinic will run from May 19 to May 26, on weekdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including the Victoria Day long weekend.

Feds support GTA transit projects with $12 billion funding announcement
The Federal government announced on Tuesday that it will spend more than $12 billion for major transit projects in Toronto and Hamilton.
Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna said Tuesday that $10.4 billion in funding will go toward four “shovel ready” transit projects in Toronto — the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Rapid Transit replacement, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and the Yonge-North subway extension. This funding will cover about 40 per cent of each project.
Projects are expected to create up to 16,000 construction jobs.

Ontario Extending Stay-at-Home Order Until June 2
With the new, more contagious variants continuing to pose significant risks, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended the Stay-at-Home Order (O. Reg. 265/21) until at least June 2, 2021. All public health and workplace safety measures under the provincewide emergency brake will also remain in effect. During this time, the government will prepare to administer the Pfizer vaccine to youth between the ages of 12 and 17, beginning the week May 31, 2021, as the province also finalizes plans to gradually and safely re-open the province.

Buttcon to start work on $32M expansion to Toronto children’s rehabilitation hospital
A two-storey addition to a children’s rehabilitation hospital in Toronto will start later this month.
The research arm of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital officially broke ground in Leaside May 10 on an expansion that will add 11,000 sq. ft. of new space to the facility. It is the final phase of a three-stage, $32 million project to scale up the Bloorview Research Institute (BRI), which focuses on childhood disability research. Buttcon Ltd. is heading the project as construction manager. It was designed by Gow Hastings Architects.

Skilled trades mobility tax deduction critical to addressing labour supply shortages: CBTU
Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) is calling on the federal government to back and pass a private member’s bill that would allow tradespeople and indentured apprentices to deduct travel expenses from their income if they work on a job located at least 80 kilometres away from their ordinary place of residence.
The goal of the legislation, known as Bill C-275 An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act, is to make it easier for tradespeople to go to where there is work available without having to bear a financial burden to do so.

Prepare vaccine policies now to protect against prosecution: Keith
Construction lawyer Norm Keith is urging all Ontario construction employers to prepare workplace vaccination policies as issues related to mandatory vaccinations, the anti-vax movement and zealous government enforcement of COVID-19 safety policies are becoming new battlegrounds in the province’s construction sector.
Keith’s warning came in the second half of an Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) webinar held May 12 and billed as Guidance for Construction and Establishing your Workplace Vaccine Policy.

Procore acquires construction artificial intelligence company, INDUS.AI
Procore Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of construction management software, today announced it has acquired INDUS.AI, makers of an artificial intelligence-powered analytics platform for the construction industry. This acquisition adds computer vision capabilities to the Procore platform, helping owners, general contractors, and specialty contractors realize greater efficiencies, safety, and profitability. Terms of the transaction are not being disclosed.
The construction industry is undergoing a digital transformation. While this transformation is producing mountains of previously inaccessible data, up to 96% of construction data goes unused.

Surety Corner – How to avoid performance bond claims on disputed contracts
Despite the best intentions of contractors, consultants and project owners, disputes in construction remain quite common and are often unavoidable. Disputes most commonly arise due to disagreements surrounding the scope of work often caused by design issues, possible defects in the work and the construction schedule. Disputes can be costly for all parties involved and may lead to delay claims, protracted lawsuits and in some cases surety bond claims.
Recently with the rollout of the new CCDC 2 (2020) contract, there has been a lot of renewed talk in the industry about carefully reviewing contracts including supplemental conditions.

CPO announces departure
After three years of service in the role of Ontario’s Chief Prevention Officer, Ron Kelusky has announced his departure. The news was revealed by Council of Ontario Construction Associations president Ian Cunningham in a release to COCA members. Kelusky indicated he would step down from his post effective July 26.
Prior to assuming the role of Chief Prevention Officer, Kelusky was the president and chief executive officer of the Public Services Health and Safety Association, the director general and the national executive lead for health programs with the Canadian Red Cross, and the vice-president and chief operating officer of the March and Dimes.
