Greetings Yagya Friends,

This month we are focused on the recitation of all four Vedas as a means of invoking the power of all the yagyas contained in the Vedas.

I thought it might be enjoyable to offer a more detailed explanation of the Vedas, what they are and why this month's recitation yagya is particularly important.

There are four Vedas known today; Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. They are unique in that the tradition holds they are "Anaadi" which means they have no beginning in time and no individual author.
The ancient rishis (seers) cognized and organized these hymns, but did not create them. They are often referred to as "the breath of Brahma" (the creator). The vedic tradition divides their writings as "shruti" (that which is heard) and "smriti" (that which is remembered). The Vedas are heard because they have a timeless existence independent of human experience.

Smriti are texts that are composed by human rishis who remember their experiences and record them. They include the Dharma Shastras which are a guide for proper living, the epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the Puranas (stories of the gods), and various philosophical texts.
The Rig Veda is the oldest Veda and is generally thought to date from 1500-1200 BCE, but there are scholars who think they are much older than that because the Vedas come from an oral tradition. There are 1028 hymns which are organized into ten books called mandalas containing 10,600 verses.
The Yajur Veda contains instructions for various puja and yagya rituals. There are 1,875 verses in the text some of which come from the Rig Veda. Generally, the origin is considered to be around 1,200 BCE.
The Sama Veda is a very melodic Veda consisting of 1,549 verses. Many of the verses are from the Rig Veda and focus on the power of spiritual knowledge and devotion.
The Atharva Veda is the youngest Veda. It contains 730 verses organized into 20 books. It dates from 1,200 to 1,000 BCE. The content is wonderfully mystical containing many spells and mantras that focus on healing and other areas of daily life.
The Vedas are mostly concerned with the details of various yagya rituals. By reciting the entirety of all four Vedas one gains the benefit of having performed each ritual. Recitation of all four Vedas is a unique spiritual accomplishment in life.

The Vedas also contain some wonderful poetry and you'll find some brief selections from each Veda beloiw.
Rig Veda quotes:

Let all meet and think with one mind. Let all hearts unite in love. Let the goal be common. May all live in happiness with a common purpose.
####
One should strongly resist miserliness and indulge in charity because one can acquire the never-ending wealth of immortality by doing so.
####
One not knowing a land asks of one who knows it,
he goes forward instructed by the knowing one.
Such, indeed, is the blessing of the guru,
one finds a path that leads him straight onward.
####
Make me immortal in that realm where beauty and joy and cheer
and transports of delight abound, where the highest desires have been filled.
####
The human body is the temple of God.
One who kindles the light of awareness within gets true light.
The sacred flame of your inner shrine is constantly bright.
The experience of unity is the fulfillment of human endeavors.
The mysteries of life are revealed
####
Yajur Veda quotes:

Truth can not be suppressed and always is the ultimate victor. So we should tread on the path of righteousness.
####
May all beings regard me with the eye of a friend. May I regard all beings with the eye of a friend. With the eye of a friend do we regard one another.
####
The person who regularly recites mantras attains liberation from the hears of disease and death.
####
O seeker, know the true nature of your soul and identify yourself with it completely.
O Lord, (may we attain) the everlasting consciousness of Supreme Light and Joy.
May we resolve to dedicate our life to the service of humankind,
and uplift them to Divinity
####
The one who loves all intensely begins perceiving in all living beings
a part of himself.
He becomes a lover of all, a part and parcel of the Universal Joy.
He flows with the stream of happiness, and is enriched by each soul
####
Sama Veda quotes:

O Agni, bring us radiant light to be our mighty aid, for Thou art our visible deity!
####
Pride of wealth destroys wealth, pride of strength destroys strength, and in the same manner pride of knowledge destroys knowledge.
####
We should take inspiration from the sun and work constantly for the benefit of mankind, so that peace and prosperity prevail everywhere.
####
Life has been compared with a battle and rightly so, as each day comes up with new challenges which we must meet. One can not shy away from the problem if one has to survive. We must meet challenges with courage”
####
Atharva Veda quotes:

The Earth is my mother, her child am I;
Infinite space is my father,
May he fill us with plenty.
####
Full of sweetness are the plants,
And full of sweetness these my words.
And with things that are full of sweetness,
I prosper in a thousand ways.
####
He takes care of all that breathes and of all that does not breathe. He has got all this conquering power. He is the one and one alone and the only one. All these luminous forces of nature become one in him
####
May heaven be peaceful,
May the earth be free from disturbance,
May the vast atmosphere be calm,
May the flowing waters be soothing
May all the plants and herbs prove beneficial to us
####
Do not be led by others,
awaken your own mind,
amass your own experience,
and decide for yourself your own path.
####
O Indra, destroy all those lustful people behaving like birds....
angry ones behaving like wolves....
greedy ones behaving like vultures....
enticed ones behaving like owls.....
arrogant ones behaving like eagles
and the jealous ones behaving like dogs.
####
As the priests say at the end of every yagya;

"Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu"

May all beings everywhere enjoy peace, happiness
and a life free from suffering
