Dear ASCLD Colleagues,
As you may know, ASCLD partners with ANSI to serve as the Secretariat, or administrator, of the United States Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) which represents the United States at ISO’s Technical Committee on Forensic Science (TC 272). For the past several years, TC 272 has been developing a five-part series of standards (ISO 21043) about the forensic science process consisting of terms and definitions, collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
Because of the pandemic, TC 272 has been meeting virtually and just wrapped up a three-month long series of meetings this week. Members of the US TAG have given many hours and done a tremendous amount of work trying to build consensus and adjudicate comments from twenty-two nations. We are grateful for the work of the US TAG on this project. Look for more information on ISO 21043 and the US TAG in the 2021 edition of the ASCLD Executive Education Digest which will be sent to our membership later this month.
Have a terrific week!
Be well,
Erin

GAO Issues Report On Assessment of Forensic Algorithms
Virginia Department of Forensic Science provided expertise for a technology assessment of forensic algorithms by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). A report capturing this information was developed and can be accessed here.
It was found that algorithms can improve the speed and objectivity of investigations. Further, the authors developed three policy options that could help with such challenges: Increased training, standards and policies on appropriate use, and increased transparency.

The webinar presentation will consist of three parts: (1) reviewing the contents of and findings in the NISTIR 8351-draft report, (2) discussing feedback received up to that point in the public comment period, and (3) providing an opportunity for interested parties and stakeholders to ask additional questions or seek clarification on the draft report.
