We are seeking a part-time Sexton (Custodian) to manage the cleaning and care of our historic sanctuary building and fellowship hall.

The Sexton assures the cleanliness and routine maintenance of the buildings, helps with setup and logistics for worship services and special events.

It has been said repeatedly that the last year and half has been a difficult time. Now that we are beginning to come back together, it is a perfect time to reflect on who we are as a church and why we are here. From the perspective of the Peace and Justice Team, one of the important reasons we are here is that God has called us to reach out to help our neighbors. The most moving part of the sermon this week for me, was how we are not here, in this church, because we believe in God, but because God believes in us. Doesn’t that change our perspective?

We are not here because it makes God feel good to see us come. We are not here because we have been “guilted” into coming. We do not come for a stage show, or to be entertained. No one forces us to come. We come because we are called to be here, to be part of this community, to be one with others, to be the hands that do God’s work. God believes in us.

This church does some wonderful work in the community, the nation and the world. The mission team supports many worthy causes: St. Anne’s Food Pantry, Sonshine Soup Kitchen, Isaiah 58, Holy Joe’s Café, just to name a few. The Peace and Justice Team works to educate us about social problems, that perhaps we can help: RIP Medical Debt, Racism (overt, or unintentional,) Substance Use Disorder, Homelessness. Just this week, members of our church are banding together to help the victims of a fire right here in town, affecting our friends and neighbors. When we are needed, we answer, because God believes in us.

We are the white church in the center. We are “church” for many in the community who do not regularly grace our sanctuary. Do these people know what we do? Perhaps they think that we are just a bunch of old white Anglo Saxon Protestants, descended from the Puritans. I once had someone tell me that they thought we must be quite rigid and strict because they thought we were like the original Puritan settlers. While we do have a long history in this country, we also have an impressive record of change and being on the forefront of social justice issues. God has believed in us for a long time.

Now is the time to reach out into the community and be the change we want to see. It is time to let others see that we are the hands that do the work of God. We do not exist just to gather and hear ourselves talk. We gather because God believes that we can change the world, one person, one day, one life at a time. If we are able to help physically, emotionally, financially, we are called to do that: Help build houses with Isaiah 58, hold luncheons for Holy Joe’s Café, call or write notes to people who need a friendly word, organize a community drive, reach out beyond our walls, our congregation and into the community. We are small, but God Believes in us and maybe by reaching out, others will see who we really are and want to join us in our work. Jesus sent out the twelve, two by two to build his church. Surely, we can do the same.

During a late spring night of 1913, the audience that was crammed in the newly opened Théâtre des Champs-Élysées would listen to what would later be called the most relevant composition of the twentieth century.

Hired by Diaghilev from the Ballets Russes for their 1913 season, composer Igor Stravinsky had come up with what he summarized as “Pictures of Pagan Russia in Two Parts”, featuring primitive rituals celebrating spring and ending with a sacrificial dance, where a young maiden dances herself to death.

The famous opening melody consists of a Lithuanian folk song played at the top of the bassoon’s register, which makes it sound like a completely different instrument. Instead of graceful sequences, Nijinsky had made his dancers perform a sequence of stomping steps.

The audience’s discontent kept growing from “derisive laughter to what Stravinsky described as a “terrific uproar”. Two factions of the audience first attacked each other, then they directed their barbs to the orchestra. To this day, we don’t know if the audience was genuinely disgusted or if they were mainly traditionalists who preemptively decided that the performance would be bad because it was progressive. Diaghilev might have had a part in encouraging this.
