Community Update - Hampstead Fire

There are several ways to assist those impacted by last week's fire where 4 families lost their homes, including our own Judy Dobson. Thank you to all who have already donated!

  1. Mail your check to HCC, 61 Main Street, payable to HCC and note your intentions to assist Judy on the memo line.
  2. Terri Malcolm is collecting local restaurant/Visa gift cards for all of the fire victims. They can be dropped off at the church office on Mon/Wed/Thu from 9-12 or in the collection box in the Hadley Hall Foyer. If you want your card to go to a particular family/individual, please make a note on the envelope/gift card and Terri will make sure they are distributed to that family/individual. If you have any questions, please contact Terri Malcolm at f.malcolm@comcast.net or give Terri a call at 603-560-1014.
  3. Judy's daughter has started a "GoFundMe" to assist Judy and her expenses. You can donate here.
  4. The Clifford/Leary family of 4 with 2 school-aged children have a fund set up thru the Hampstead Branch of Pentucket Bank. You can visit the bank located in the plaza with Prime Butcher and make a cash or check donation to the CLIFFORD/LEARY FAMILY FUND - no other information will be needed as the bank will know the account number. Erin will be able to do some of the rides but we could use others to help too.

Scam Emails

Emails are often sent, saying they are from Pastor Kathy or another staff member. She (or the HCC staff) will never send out a generic email--she'll address it to your name. She will never ask you for money/gift cards over email. Also, it will always have her signature line on the bottom with her phone number/address. If in doubt, please call the church or send an email to pastorkathyucc@gmail.com.

A Word from Peace & Justice

Now is the time. God Believes in Us.

It has been said repeatedly that the last year and half has been a difficult time. Now that we are beginning to come back together, it is a perfect time to reflect on who we are as a church and why we are here. From the perspective of the Peace and Justice Team, one of the important reasons we are here is that God has called us to reach out to help our neighbors. The most moving part of the sermon this week for me, was how we are not here, in this church, because we believe in God, but because God believes in us. Doesn’t that change our perspective?

We are not here because it makes God feel good to see us come. We are not here because we have been “guilted” into coming. We do not come for a stage show, or to be entertained. No one forces us to come. We come because we are called to be here, to be part of this community, to be one with others, to be the hands that do God’s work. God believes in us.

This church does some wonderful work in the community, the nation and the world. The mission team supports many worthy causes: St. Anne’s Food Pantry, Sonshine Soup Kitchen, Isaiah 58, Holy Joe’s Café, just to name a few. The Peace and Justice Team works to educate us about social problems, that perhaps we can help: RIP Medical Debt, Racism (overt, or unintentional,) Substance Use Disorder, Homelessness. Just this week, members of our church are banding together to help the victims of a fire right here in town, affecting our friends and neighbors. When we are needed, we answer, because God believes in us.

We are the white church in the center. We are “church” for many in the community who do not regularly grace our sanctuary. Do these people know what we do? Perhaps they think that we are just a bunch of old white Anglo Saxon Protestants, descended from the Puritans. I once had someone tell me that they thought we must be quite rigid and strict because they thought we were like the original Puritan settlers. While we do have a long history in this country, we also have an impressive record of change and being on the forefront of social justice issues. God has believed in us for a long time.

Now is the time to reach out into the community and be the change we want to see. It is time to let others see that we are the hands that do the work of God. We do not exist just to gather and hear ourselves talk. We gather because God believes that we can change the world, one person, one day, one life at a time. If we are able to help physically, emotionally, financially, we are called to do that: Help build houses with Isaiah 58, hold luncheons for Holy Joe’s Café, call or write notes to people who need a friendly word, organize a community drive, reach out beyond our walls, our congregation and into the community. We are small, but God Believes in us and maybe by reaching out, others will see who we really are and want to join us in our work. Jesus sent out the twelve, two by two to build his church. Surely, we can do the same.
Notes from the Music Director . . .
Sharing some interesting stories and facts with you about famous composers.
The Rite of Spring at Théâtre des Champs Élysées

During a late spring night of 1913, the audience that was crammed in the newly opened Théâtre des Champs-Élysées would listen to what would later be called the most relevant composition of the twentieth century.

Hired by Diaghilev from the Ballets Russes for their 1913 season, composer Igor Stravinsky had come up with what he summarized as “Pictures of Pagan Russia in Two Parts”, featuring primitive rituals celebrating spring and ending with a sacrificial dance, where a young maiden dances herself to death.

The famous opening melody consists of a Lithuanian folk song played at the top of the bassoon’s register, which makes it sound like a completely different instrument. Instead of graceful sequences, Nijinsky had made his dancers perform a sequence of stomping steps.

The audience’s discontent kept growing from “derisive laughter to what Stravinsky described as a “terrific uproar”. Two factions of the audience first attacked each other, then they directed their barbs to the orchestra. To this day, we don’t know if the audience was genuinely disgusted or if they were mainly traditionalists who preemptively decided that the performance would be bad because it was progressive. Diaghilev might have had a part in encouraging this.

Blankets for Project Linus
For those of you who have been busy sewing, quilting, knitting, or crocheting, we have an new opportunity to donate those handmade items!

We located a national organization that has local chapters called Project Linus (https://www.facebook.com/projectlinussouthwestnewhampshire/). This organization's mission is "to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans". Blankets are given to children in need through NH.

*We welcome all styles of blankets made in child-friendly colors/prints.
*Crocheted, knitted, quilted (100% cotton or flannel), fleece….you don’t have to be an expert!
*Blankets must be NEW, HANDMADE and WASHABLE.
*Fabric blankets can be quilted by machine, hand or tied. If you are tying the blanket make sure the ends are trimmed to 1” and the knots are secure.
*Please do not add any embellishments to the blankets such as buttons that could be swallowed by a child.
*If you are using a no-sew fleece pattern, please be sure to trim off both selvages FIRST. Not sure what selvages are? Ask the clerk who is cutting your fleece to please show you, they’re those odd looking edges at the top and bottom of the piece you have, sort of raggy looking.
*We accept all sizes of blankets. We donate to children, infants through teen years, so any size is appropriate. Baby blankets are typically 36”X36” or 36”X42”, toddler-pre-teen are typically about 40”X60”, and teen blankets are at least 60"X72".

Blankets can be dropped off in the bassinet in the entry way of Hadley Hall.
Thank you for your support of this project!
