Central Ohio's Largest Irish-American Women's Organization
"American by birth, Irish by the grace of God!"
Dear Daughters of Erin Members,

I cannot believe it has been over six months since most of us have seen each other in person! 2020 has been a challenging year. I miss our get-togethers! I had hoped that by September we could once again hold an in-person general meeting. Unfortunately, St. Christopher’s and other Columbus Catholic diocesan facilities as well as other venues are not able to accommodate large meetings or events. In September and possibly October, we will once again be meeting via Zoom. Please don’t miss our September meeting, it will be packed with information about upcoming fundraisers, bylaw changes, etc. In addition, we will be discussing our plans to connect with you and see how you’re doing. If you had problems connecting to Zoom in the past, please reach out to me at mckoprs@yahoo.com or to any of our Board members. Hope you are staying well and look forward to seeing you on Zoom this Sunday!

Peace,
Chris
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER CHARITY DONATIONS

We are collecting school supplies for our designated charity in September & October. Any donations of school supplies will be accepted and delivered to needy schools throughout Columbus. We can make arrangements for "no-touch" pickup, or coordinate a drop-off. You can contact Cheryl Costello at 614-774-8879 or you can email at cherylcostello@yahoo.com.

  • The DOE will also be having an ongoing collection of gently-used children's books to be donated to the Ohio Job & Family Services for children who come in with their parents for benefit assistance.

  • In November & December, we will be collecting for our adopt-a-families. If you know of a family that may need assistance during the holidays, please contact Cheryl. All participants will be kept confidential.

  • We will be compiling a list of charities for consideration for additional donations. Please forward names and contact persons for any charities that you would like to recommend to Cheryl or any Board member by Wednesday, Oct. 7, for review at the Board meeting.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO DAUGHTERS OF ERIN CONSTITUTION
Due to our current situation with COVID-19, the Board thought it best to propose amendments to our Constitution to bring us up to date with virtual meetings and elections. References for these changes were the State of Ohio Revised Code, Roberts Rules of Order and the online application ZOOM.
Below you will find the proposed changes in yellow. The following paragraphs will show the current Sections and how they read for your comparison.

Explanations regarding what each Section means with the new changes.

Article V, Section 3 – When a new budget is created, the amount paid to the Financial Secretary is decided at this time. The budget is then brought in front of the membership for approval which happens in January. Previously, the Section stated that the stipend would be approved at the June meeting.

Article VII, Section 1 – General membership meetings - “Present in person” means to physically attend the meeting. We added a provision to hold meetings virtually. The current mode of virtual meetings at this time is ZOOM, but could change to another online application or service in the future.

Article VII, Section 4 – Board meetings - “Present in person” means to physically attend the meeting. We added a provision to hold meetings virtually. The current mode of virtual meetings at this time is ZOOM, but could change to another online application/service in the future.

Article VII, Section 6 – This Section has been added to allow a person to attend a meeting virtually even when we have returned to meetings in person. They must get prior approval from the President.

Article VII, Section 7 – If a meeting is being held virtually, all materials must be made available to members 24 hours in advance. (agenda, minutes, financial report…)

Article VII, Section 8 – ZOOM is the current online application of choice for virtual meetings. This app allows its users to create a “poll” or question, such as a motion, to be sent to all on the meeting for their review and input. Members would have access to answer a yay or nay to any motion and the organization would have a written record. This written option would be a more accurate account of voting than an oral vote or hand raising.

Article VIII, Section 2 – The committee decided to add the words “none of which can be current candidates on the ballot.” This has never happened during an election to our knowledge and it is common sense, but we felt it should be added for clarification for future elections.

These changes will be displayed for two months for your review. In the third month, our general membership will vote on the acceptance or denial of these changes. Each Section will be voted on individually and not as a whole.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please feel free to contact Parliamentarian, Peggy Shanahan pshanahan116@gmail.com or 614-323-6941 cell.
