Cozumel Drift - Special Edition
Yes, we are open at the Village and we are diving again. Cozumel is opening slowly and carefully. We still have curfew but it has been pshed back from 9pm. Which is very reasonable. And there are many more places opening. 20 hotels on the island are open.
We are still in ORANGE meaning
we are OPEN for business at both the dive shop and hotel. The first guests (since the COVID shut down) arrived last week !

The color scheme here illustrates how open we can be. ORANGE - We can operate at 30% capacity. You can READ MORE HERE . Personally I believe we will stay orange for AT LEAST another week. This Sun, Jun 21 will be 2 weeks. If we can make an additional week without a large spike, they may decide to allow us to move to yellow, meaning 60% operational. Fingers crossed. Stay tuned as the weeks go on. Again, my personal opinion.

How're the reefs you ask?
Did you know, that the reefs in Cozumel have not been dived on for over 2 months. Which is good for the reef. If you think about it, the southern part of the marine park was closed from Oct 5 - Dec 15 2019. Then everything opened from Dec 15 - March 31. Then everything was shut down from Apr 1 - Jun 9. So, in the past 8.5 months, we have not been diving on the reef for 1/2 of that time - woo hoo ! What a great rest for the reefs.
Peacock Flounder
Now, when the boys came back the first couple of days and said they look really good. I was wondering if it really was that the reefs were good, or that their perception was off since we have not been diving for more than 2 months? It is so easy to not see something for a while, and then it looks brand new once you head back. Thu I went to Yucab and man the reef looks great. A
TON of lobster, and tons of fish and baby fish and colorful sponges - totally awesome!
What there is a lot of on the reefs are.... lionfish.... and juvenile lionfish, like the one pictures here. But rest assured, both Rudy and Carmelo are doing their parts in getting it back under control. The one day Rudy caught 8 big lionfish. Another day, Carmelo got 3. So we are working on that part to eliminate them.
Jawfish
Both on the reefs, and from the shore... there are a ton of these fun fellows - jawfish. So fun to watch. Did not see one with eggs in the mouth unfortunately.

From the shore there is a lot of algae and sea grasses that have grown over the sandy parts in front of the dive shop. What is that all about?? Not sure but there still a ton to see. Especially for a night dive. The first night they shortened the curfew, we went out from the shore (boats are not authorized yet) and it was awesome. Ken Olson saw his first octopus - and man did that guys put on a show... once he moved from his hiding place. 2 octopus, 4 lobster, 3 different types of eels, squid, tons of different species of pufferfish.... well worth it !
Octopus
Burrfish
So right now, there is only 1 reef closure - and that is Paradise Reef. What about night dives? Well, for a single night dive tank, we can go to Chankanaab or San Clemente or Yucab. The best option is of course a twilight 2-tank dive trip, where the 2nd tank is a night dive. That allows for more reef options for the night dive.

Also, El Cielo is open again. So we can go there and enjoy the starfish. No anchors though.

KATHY SULLIVAN, A TRUE EXPLORER
First person ever to walk in space as well as visit the Challenger Deep. And it's a woman.
In the midsts of all the news about quarantines and COVID and restrictions, its refreshing to share something a little different.

On June 7th, 2020 Kathy Sullivan made history, again. The first time was in 1984 when she became the first woman to walk in space. This time it was for a taking on a mission the other direction, descending nearly 7 miles down from the surface into the Mariana Trench to a spot called the Challenger Deep.
The Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, it is the deepest trench on the earth. The Challenger Deep, its deepest most point point is some 10,984 meters (36,037 feet) or 6.825 miles down. By way of comparison, if you were to place Mount Everest (the highest point on earth) at the bottom of the Challenger Deep, its peak would still be over two kilometers or 1.2 miles below the ocean surface. YIKES!!!!

What to read a little more about Kathy Sullivan and this amazing adventure? Here are couple links where you can check out more.

Travel Information
Just like so many other things these days, the information from the airlines seems to change daily. This is making it a little tougher to get here, but with some proper planning its still very doable. I’ve already talked to several people who have booked their trips for this fall. We have moved the latest information to our website and will do our best to keep it up to date until things return to "normal". Click the button below to go to the page.
We also have some additional travel information on this page. Most importantly, despite rumors, misinformation and sometimes bad reporting by the press, THERE IS NO TRAVEL BAN TO OR FROM MEXICO! The border is not closed. The U.S. & Mexico LAND border crossing have been closed to non-essential traffic for sometime now. But this does not affect those of you wishing to fly to Cozumel. We have placed some helpful links and information on this page, so if you are looking for travel info, click on the button above.
We hope to see you and your family soon, so that we can make many more great memories!
