About Nando
Nando Parrado is a living legend whose perseverance enabled him to survive a horrific accident. On October 12, 1972, a chartered Fairchild airplane carried an Uruguayan rugby team to an exhibition match in Chile. During the flight, the plane clipped a mountain peak deep in the Andes breaking apart the fuselage and causing the front half of the plane to crash into a glacier at nearly 12,000 feet. For ten excruciating weeks and in subzero temperatures, the passengers suffered unimaginable deprivations. Nando was one of only sixteen of the original forty-five passengers and crew to make it off the mountain alive. The story was retold by Piers Paul Read in his book, Alive, and later in the movie starring Ethan Hawke as Nando.
