Deadly Trespass Excerpt:

"It wasn’t a bear—the soft feet in the dirt near my head. I pushed my hat off my face and lifted one loose tent flap. A wolf sat staring at me. Through threads of mist, coal black markings like heavy mascara outlined his eyes and the tips of his ears. The rest of the visible wolf was a mouth curved like a smile. I thought of Alice in Wonderland’s Cheshire Cat appearing one body part at a time, smile first. The wolf I saw was only ears, nose, eyes, and mouth—anything black that parted ground hugging fog."

Track soup CORRECTION! John Glowa from the Maine Wolf Coalition was quick to reply to my last newsletter: "Sorry to say that the track in the photo is not a lynx track. It is a canid track. The track would have an indented area around the pads due to the fur on the paws. The track would be wider and rounder. " (See the real lynx track above here.)

(Pic I sent.) I think I was wishing for lynx rather than coyotes. John, however, is always wishing for wolves. Thanks, John. The howling couple in "Deadly Trespass" is based on the work John and his volunteers have been out doing. For years. Howling is just part of it.

John also sent along a recent article.

"DNA from a scat sample found near the Canadian border last summer came back 85% wolf, according to the Maine Wolf Coalition. Upcoming before the end of this perhaps way-too-long year: in celebration of the birds and bats that animate the plot of my second mystery, "Deadly Turn," I'm giving away a half-day winter birding trip (for 2) at Downeast Nature Tours.
