Dear Friends,
Since our founding during the civil rights movement 56 years ago, Community Teamwork has striven to give everyone a voice. Starting with our Board which is made up of 1/3 low-income representatives; 1/3 public officials and 1/3 community sector, we have made an effort to bring all of our voices together. Unfortunately, many in our community still do not have a voice.
We see that many policies and laws are rooted in injustice and like many, we are saddened and angered over the events of these past weeks. The question we will continue to ask of ourselves individually and as an organization is,
What can we do?
We recognize we have a long way to go, but as a start, Community Teamwork has engaged our leadership teams in discussions around systemic racism and its affect on our staff, clients and community. In 2019, we formed a Diversity and Inclusion Committee and engaged in staff training around Diversity and Inclusion. In addition, we have recently facilitated conversations with our youth in our YouthBuild and LAB programs around their feelings towards recent events and w
e are surveying our staff to find out how they have been affected by recent events and overall racism, and what we can do to promote change.
We are making a commitment to continue to learn and make changes for a more equitable world. We appreciate that even the COVID virus is related to racism as there is disproportionate numbers of black and brown people affected and dying. with many having inadequate health care.
Community Teamwork is working with local and state associations to share our voices for change in policies and you will see these goals and actions outlined in our upcoming strategic plan. Together our voices will help improve economic, housing, education and health resources for all.
