Arctic’s ‘Last Ice Area’ May Be Less Resistant to Global Warming

Last August, scientists aboard an icebreaker that had been drifting with the ice across the Arctic Ocean in a yearlong research expedition decided to take a detour to the North Pole. They needed to get there quickly, so they used satellite data to find a route where the concentration of sea ice was low enough for the icebreaker, the Polarstern, to push through easily. They found it in an unlikely place, the Wandel Sea, just north of Greenland.

Polar Bears Face Extinction in Svalbard and Arctic Russia

According to Dag Vongraven, climate change will ultimately lead to the extinction of the polar bear population in Svalbard and major parts of the Russian Arctic. He is outgoing Chair of the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission’s (SSC) Polar Bear Specialist Group. “I believe the polar bears in 50 years’ time will live only in northern Canada and in Greenland, in the far western polar waters referred to as “the Last Ice Area”, Vongraven explains.

Kugluktuk Bug Collection in the Name of Science

Kugluktuk youth between 17-30 years old set up traps and collected invertebrates like spiders and bees over five days as part of a collaborative project between the Canadian High Arctic Research Station in Cambridge Bay and the University of Guelph. The goal of the project, called ARCBIO, is to create a platform for surveying animals, plants, fungi and lichens in the North based on their “DNA barcodes” to automate species identification.

2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses

Organizers announce, that due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses has been postponed to 2022. This symposium will bring together molecular microbial ecologists specializing in different organism groups to share our latest results and discuss methodological problems, as well as future prospects in the field, including practical international collaborations. The environmental focus will be on cryospheric environments including sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and permafrost, but excellent research in other polar environments is also invited. The methods to be discussed will focus on 'omics' techniques, ranging from single cells to metagenomes, but research using additional methods is encouraged as well.
