Heavy rain forecasted, be aware of localized flooding

The National Weather Service forecast calls for rain through the weekend and into next week. This may result in isolated flooding.

While strong winds are expected to help limit flooding, it is still possible during episodes of heavy rain. Make sure all storm drains remain clear of leaves and debris. This helps limit localized flooding.

If you are traveling on roads or streets covered with significant water, remember:

  • Never walk, bike or drive through moving water. As little as 6 inches of water can sweep a vehicle off a road.

  • Respect road closure signs. High water/flood barricades are in place to protect the public. Moving and driving around road-closure devices is against the law and carries a fine of $260. To report someone moving or traveling around a barricade, call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office nonemergency dispatch at 503-629-0111.

To request help or report a road hazard:

  • Call 9-1-1 (life-threatening emergency)

  • Call 503-629-0111 (after hours, nonemergency)

  • Call 503-846-ROAD (846-7623) (during business hours)

  • Call Clean Water Services at 503-547-8100 to report flooding in urban unincorporated areas (outside of cities)

Travel safely after time change

fall time change

It’s time to "fall back" this weekend and travelers should prepare for the transition.

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Setting the clock back an hour leaves some feeling tired and can result in accidents and injuries. Stay alert and stay safe as you travel.

It will get darker earlier in the evening. Visibility may be impacted during commuting hours. Use headlights, bicycle lights and reflective clothing to see and be seen.

Drivers and bicyclists can prevent crashes by slowing down and increasing distance between vehicles. Don’t get behind the wheel or the handlebars if you are feeling drowsy.
