Good Morning!
I came across this quote recently by John Woolman from his journal:
"My heart hath often been deeply afflicted under a feeling that the standard of pure righteousness is not lifted up to the people by us, as a society, in that clearness which it might have been, had we been as faithful as we ought to be to the teachings of Christ.”
The phrase that jumps out is faithful as we ought to be to the teachings of Christ.
What does it mean to be faithful to the teachings of Jesus? Well, here are some (paraphrases) of some things Jesus said when he was teaching:
*Shine my light into a dark world…that I may be glorified (Matthew 5:14-16)
*Love your neighbor…and be a good neighbor…like the guy who stops to help a bleeding person on the side of the road was a good neighbor (Luke 10:25-37)
*Oh…and don’t just love your neighbor (that’s easy)…love the ones who are really hard to love (Matthew 5:43-47)
*Love God…love people…these are the greatest of the commandments (Matthew 22:37-40)
After looking over these teachings from Jesus, and so many more, it is easy to see how Woolman landed on the idea that if we want to be right and good, we need to see Jesus as the standard of right and good. And...we need not to just observe the right and good teachings of Jesus, we need to be faithful to them.
May we all continue to find new ways to be faithful to the teachings of Christ!
