Bruce Museum will be showing Contemporary Artists/Traditional Forms: Chinese Brushwork through December 8. This exhibition debuts 15 contemporary Chinese brushwork pieces to the U.S. The pieces, gifted to the Town of Greenwich through the 2019 U.S.-China Art and Culture Exchange, introduce viewers to the tools and concepts of brushwork. Brushwork, also called water-painting, was developed in China during the Han Dynasty (220-589 AD) from calligraphy. Traditional brushwork was made by amateur artists known as Scholar Artists, who had mastered calligraphy and often incorporated brushwork into their poems. The works in Contemporary Artists/Traditional Forms: Chinese Brushwork highlight the connection between calligraphy and brushwork found in contemporary Chinese brushwork art, as well as the connection between the traditional expression of the art form and its modern one. Though the artists exhibited utilize an established language of brushstrokes, color, and images, they use these ancient techniques to put forth their own perspective. The result is an exhibition that demonstrates the intersection of past and present and image and writing. Southern Vermont Arts Center is now showing Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints through November 17. This exhibition, curated by guest curator Steven Schlussel, celebrates the work of woodblock artist Andō Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō in 1797. He is revered as one of the great masters of the color woodblock print, so much so that an estimated 10,000 copies were made from some of his woodblocks. It is believed he created over 5,000 prints in his lifetime. Hiroshige's prints were simple yet decorative, filtering his own perceptions down to their barest essence and using them to create effective and beautiful compositions. The prints featured in Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints are genuine Japanese woodblocks, made in the 20th century. Each one was meticulously reproduced from recut woodblocks using traditional methods, made just as it would have been during Hiroshige's time. Even hundreds of years after the original prints were created, each piece in Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints continues to captivate viewers with its simple yet elegant beauty.
