Contemporary Artists/Traditional Forms: Chinese Brushwork at Bruce Museum
in Greenwich, Connecticut, through December 8

Bruce Museum
Wenzhang, Sun, The end of spring, painted in Beijing.

Bruce Museum will be showing Contemporary Artists/Traditional Forms: Chinese Brushwork through December 8. This exhibition debuts 15 contemporary Chinese brushwork pieces to the U.S. The pieces, gifted to the Town of Greenwich through the 2019 U.S.-China Art and Culture Exchange, introduce viewers to the tools and concepts of brushwork. Brushwork, also called water-painting, was developed in China during the Han Dynasty (220-589 AD) from calligraphy. Traditional brushwork was made by amateur artists known as Scholar Artists, who had mastered calligraphy and often incorporated brushwork into their poems. The works in Contemporary Artists/Traditional Forms: Chinese Brushwork highlight the connection between calligraphy and brushwork found in contemporary Chinese brushwork art, as well as the connection between the traditional expression of the art form and its modern one. Though the artists exhibited utilize an established language of brushstrokes, color, and images, they use these ancient techniques to put forth their own perspective. The result is an exhibition that demonstrates the intersection of past and present and image and writing. Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive in Greenwich, Connecticut and is open TuesdaySunday 10:00 a.m.5:00 p.m. For more information, visit brucemuseum.org/contemporary-artists-traditional-forms-chinese-brushwork.

Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints at Southern Vermont Arts Center
in Manchester, Vermont, through November 17

Southern Vermont Arts Center
Andō Hiroshige, Autumn Moon on the Tama River.

Southern Vermont Arts Center is now showing Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints through November 17. This exhibition, curated by guest curator Steven Schlussel, celebrates the work of woodblock artist Andō Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō in 1797. He is revered as one of the great masters of the color woodblock print, so much so that an estimated 10,000 copies were made from some of his woodblocks. It is believed he created over 5,000 prints in his lifetime. Hiroshige's prints were simple yet decorative, filtering his own perceptions down to their barest essence and using them to create effective and beautiful compositions. The prints featured in Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints are genuine Japanese woodblocks, made in the 20th century. Each one was meticulously reproduced from recut woodblocks using traditional methods, made just as it would have been during Hiroshige's time. Even hundreds of years after the original prints were created, each piece in Gallery One Series: Andō Hiroshige Woodblock Prints continues to captivate viewers with its simple yet elegant beauty. Southern Vermont Arts Center is located at 930 SVAC Drive West Road in Manchester, Vermont and is open TuesdaySaturday 10:00 a.m.5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:005:00 p.m. For more information, please visit https://www.svac.org/gallery-one-series-ando-hiroshige-woodblock-prints.

Pressing Matters: The Unique Print and Contexture at South Shore Art Center
in Cohasset, Massachusetts through November 3

South Shore Art Center

Deedee Agee, Waiting, 2013, monotype, 26" x 32".

South Shore Art Center currently has two exhibitions on view through November 3. In Bancroft Gallery is Pressing Matters: The Unique Print, curated by Terry Coleman, Nancy Connolly, Donna Ingemanson and Deanne Noiseux. This exhibit features an array of monotype prints made by members of the Coastal Print Makers. One artist, Jane Johnston, left her career as an art teacher to focus on printmaking, and now works with hundreds of students a year as a docent at South Shore Art Center. According to an interview, Johnston says that "printmaking gives her a way to express herself in many different ways in every piece she makes." The same is true for Pressing Matters as a whole, which displays a wide variety of monotypes that each express the perspectives of the artists who made them. Meanwhile, Dillon Gallery is showing Contexture, a collaborative exhibit featuring the work of Ann Conte and Jeanne Wiley. According to the exhibit page, "contexture" means "a mass of things interwoven together" or "the fact or manner of being woven or linked together to form a connected whole." Conte and Wiley have been collaborating for over a decade, and are thus able to not only weave together disparate mediums like glass, oil, encaustic, ceramic and watercolor but also develop compositions on boards by working together directly. One artists paints, and the other artist reinterprets the painting, creating a new work. Both Pressing Matters: The Unique Print and Contexture reveal beauty and skill across many mediums, artists, and perspectives. South Shore Art Center is located at 119 Ripley Road in Cohasset, Massachusetts and is open MondaySaturday 10:00 a.m.4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:004:00 p.m. For more information, please visit ssac.org/bancroft and ssac.org/dillon.
