You are a First Gen Success who participated in the GlobalMindED Leadership Class. What is your personal story and what motivates you to be your best? What is your personal story and what motivates you to be your best?
I actually used to hate school. When I was in primary school, I always dreaded going. I was bullied a lot throughout primary school and didn’t want to go back into school after going through a school shooting in 2013. If you asked any of my teachers, they would probably be surprised to hear that I am about to be the first in my family to graduate from college. When I first started college in 2016, because my parents expected me to go and get the degree that they could not get, I wasn’t able to appreciate school. But learning about what it means to be a first generation college student and how to help others in higher education started to motivate me. When I started to attend a community college in 2018, I was able to be more involved with the community and be able to help students. I got a job on campus, and became the president of a club while at that college. This is what motivated me to be my best- to be able to help other students who may not know their higher education path and to be the best I can be for my family.
What is your current job and what are your goals for it?
I actually work for my community college even though I graduated from it last year! I work for Arapahoe Community College Career and Transfer Services as a Partner Relations Specialist. This is a part time position, about 30 hours a week. I do this job and I am a full time student at CU Denver as well. I graduate next year with my Bachelor’s in Sociology. My current goals in my current job (as a student and as an employee) is to be able to reach out to as many people as I can and make connections. I hope in the future, once I graduate, to continue working in higher education.
How has GlobalMindED helped you and the development of your leadership skills?
GlobalMindEd helped me learn how to give an elevator pitch and help me learn how to pitch myself to potential future employers. I was able to learn some great communication skills I had never learned before, and with that I am now able to sell myself and what skills I have. I got to learn so much about communication and what it means to be a first-generation college student.
What did you most get from GlobalMindED and how would you like to give back now to pay it forward?d
GlobalMindED gave me confidence. When I attended in 2019, I wasn’t sure what to expect and I was nervous about going. Meeting people and being able to connect with others made me realize that I should be confident in who I am. Confidence is something that I have always struggled with throughout my whole life. I used to be so shy and quiet, and I think being part of GlobalMindED helped me gain the confidence I needed to thrive in higher education.

GlobalMindED and the SDG Impact Fund are delighted to announce GlobalMindED's Donor Advised Fund. 2020 is the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 25th Anniversary of the Beijing Women's Declaration and Action Platform. Many from around the world are thinking of 2020 as the gateway to our most vital decade for delivering equity, the Sustainable Development Goals, and a world where all can thrive. Our key time for these outcomes is 2020-2030.
GlobalMindED DAF and the SDG Impact Fund are a powerful combined force for good as the 2019 year comes to a close and we reflect on the gratitude and the commitments we make to the causes we care most about. The DAF offers immense power and flexibility for giving prior to the year's end as you plant seeds of generous intention for 2020 and the decade ahead.
When you contribute to GlobalMindED, you support First Gen students. We have served more than 400 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

THE FLYOVER NATION
Energy's Role in a Troubled Heartland
By J.C. Whorton
A unique and timely discussion of the challenging issues facing the country’s troubled Heartland.
Since the beginning of westward expansion into the Heartland’s vast regions, natural resource development has played a historic role in shaping its communities. Today, domestic oil and gas development offers one of the strongest prospects for the Heartland’s present and future prosperity as well as the nation’s re-emergence as a dominant player in the global energy economy.
The U.S. is now the world’s largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, two circumstances that are universally disrupting international geopolitical order. The earth has a finite supply of natural resources and a rapidly growing and over consuming population.
As America positions itself for a very uncertain and constantly evolving global marketplace, will the Heartland become America’s “great connector” or “great divide”?
