Judge Baker Celebrates
Autism Acceptance Month
For those who may not know, the month of April is Autism Acceptance Month. This is an opportunity to not only learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but to spread awareness and acceptance of ASD. Statistically speaking, most of us know at least one person who is on the autism spectrum, or is the family member of someone on the autism spectrum. In April, we shone a spotlight on some of our key programs and services that are instrumental in providing support and acceptance to those with ASD.
Our NEXT STEP: College Success & Independent Living program is designed for students, ages 16 - 20, who present with a social language deficit and are serious about attending college after high school. This program is appropriate for young adults with ASD/ Asperger’s Syndrome, Non-verbal Learning Disorder (NLD), or related learning differences. Next Step has helped prepare dozens of students for the next chapter of their lives, and more importantly, has assured them that there are other teens like them who share the same interests and goals. A critical component of Next Step is relationship-building and promoting acceptance and understanding of those with ASD. See our Events section below for information on Next Step's upcoming Virtual Saturday Session in May!
Another critical service we offer to the ASD community is our assessment services at our new Waltham-based clinic, The Baker Center for Children & Families. These assessment services help our expert clinicians identify symptoms of ASD and provide insightful recommendations for children and their families. This process helps increase awareness of ASD by giving children and their families the resources they need to best succeed at home, at school, and in life.
Toward the end of Autism Acceptance Month, we were so thrilled to receive a socially distanced visit from our friends at the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness and acceptance of ASD. We gave our partners a tour of the The Baker Center for Children & Families and had engaging and constructive conversations about our mutual goal of increasing access to ASD resources.
We can't wait to continue to conversation, even beyond Autism Acceptance Month!

Judge Baker's President & CEO
Meets With Congresswoman Katherine Clark
In February, we were so thankful to have had the opportunity to Zoom with Congresswoman Katherine Clark and talk about the services provided at our new Baker Center for Children and Families at Waltham. These are incredibly difficult times for children and her tireless advocacy makes such a difference. The conversation was a productive one and we look forward to continuing to advocate for children's mental health.

Judge Baker Holds LGBTQ+ Policy Event
This month, we had the opportunity to host a virtual event coordinated by our Evidence-Based Policy Institute which focused on providing an overview of our current work focused on improving outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
The event examined the factors which contribute to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing disproportionate negative outcomes including homelessness, substance use, and suicide, despite Massachusetts standing as a leader in LGBTQ+ equality. The presentation featured a panel of both those with lived experience in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as experts in the realm of LGBTQ+ policy.

Introducing Spotlight On: Supporting Transgender
& Gender-Nonconforming (T/GNC)
Youth in Massachusetts
It's our pleasure to announce the newest entry in our "Spotlight On" series, written and coordinated by our Evidence-Based Policy Institute. This entry is titled "Supporting Transgender & Gender-Nonconforming (T/GNC) Youth in Massachusetts". In this report, we examine the experiences that contribute to the growth and development of T/GNC youth, as well as the reasons why many of these youth disproportionately experience negative social, physical, and behavioral health outcomes.

Manville School Returns to In-Person Learning
Just like most other schools in the state, our Manville School has returned to phased in-person learning. We are adhering to every re-opening guideline set by the state in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
We know our students have had some difficulty working with a period of virtual-only learning and that the pandemic may have increased levels of anxiety or depression. Our staff was hard at work preparing for the eventual re-opening of the school and have been tirelessly providing support to students and their families. The year has been going great so far!
Thank you so much to the Manville community for continuing to place your trust in us to care for your children and we are so happy to see them in-person again!
