Dear Salmon Bay Families,
The middle school teachers, Ms. Taylor and I had all middle schoolers come down for a talk around “hate messages”, earlier this week.  Unfortunately, we have had some disrespectful writing on the bathroom walls and lockers.  Students have reported the N word in several locations and most recently a student reported that they went to their locker and there was a swastika carved on the front of the locker, and it happened two more times. The staff and I are greatly saddened by this. While it has only occurred in middle school, we feel it important to let our whole community know what has happened.

We have such a special school and community and to be subjected to this disrespectful behavior is devastating. We are all impacted by unkind language and images, which is what we shared with middle school students. While it is hard to understand why this occurred, we recognize the history and pain behind the writing and carving.

When I told students what this was about, they were so attentive, and we could see that they cared and wanted to be a part of the solution. Karly and Sam both shared the importance of emotional safety which is a corner stone to a strong community. They also reminded students that a big part of our learning occurs out in the community and that showing care and kindness to each other starts right here at Salmon Bay.

I shared with students parts of our mission statement that is posted in the foyer of the school. One important part is: We teach social skills and emotional intelligence to create a safe school community and promote responsibility for each other. We all have a responsibility to each other and when we do things that contradict, it hurts us all.

We explained to students that you, their parents, chose Salmon Bay because it is a special place. We have special programs, and we are a caring community. We shared another piece of our vision:  We engage in the work of social justice by examining identity, building knowledge, and developing skills to challenge inequities. This is the work that we all should be engaged in. When students see something, they need to say something by finding a trusted adult, a teacher, a parent, someone to report to.

Parents you are our partners as we strive to help students be their best selves, and we thank you for your support! We want your students to move off to high school and be able to say that they always felt safe here at Salmon Bay!

Ms. Taylor had students close their eyes and then she asked “If you have every felt like you did not belong at Salmon Bay” raise your hand. A lot of hands went up, and we want that number to become zero!

As a proactive gesture we dismissed students, and teachers continued the discussion in smaller groups in classrooms. Sam emailed me later in the day and said that discussions were going well!
We are an amazing community, and we are all in this together!

Ms. Dixon and Ms. Taylor

Halloween Celebrations
Students and staff across all grade levels got in on the Halloween fun this past Monday! Thank you to everyone who helped make our costume parade, classroom celebrations and middle school block party a success!
Salmon Tank Prep
Preparations are already underway for our salmon eggs, which will arrive in January! A volunteer from Salmon in the Schools visited this week to work with Teacher Marian Wagner and fifth grade students on preparing our salmon tank. The salmon tank will be located in the school lobby so all students can watch the salmon grow. Thank you in advance to our fifth grade students who will help lead this project and care for our future salmon!

K-5 Enrichment Fee Due Now
Elementary classes have been participating in lots of field trips! The funding for these field trips comes from student enrichment fees. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).
Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

We have an online payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student’s SPS Source account. Click here for instructions on how to access your student’s Source account and the SchoolPay system. Once you are logged in the Source, navigate to SchoolPay using the menu on the left side of your screen. This SchoolPay flier may also be helpful.

Enrichment fees are due now. Scholarship funds are available. To request a scholarship, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, Brittni Zackery, Counselor or Rob Bright, Counselor. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome. You may add a scholarship donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.

If you have any questions about enrichment fees, camp fees or scholarships, please email Jodi at jrrussell@seattleschools.org

Thank you to the many volunteers who have made it possible for so many students to participate in field experiences and celebrations this fall. We couldn't do it without you!

Before too much time passes, I'd like to collect photos for the yearbook from our fall activities. If you have a photo from a classroom activity, field trip or Halloween celebration that you'd like to share, please send it to Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator.

New Faces at Salmon Bay
My name is Tejara Mortensen ( I also go by Tae) and I am the new Attendance Secretary.
I was born in Tacoma, Washington. I attended school in Lakewood, spent a few years living in Florida due to government employment with my family, and then returned to Lakewood, WA to graduate. During my time in school I did cheerleading from age 11, to become Captain in high school and then coach little league as an adult. I have two awesome kiddos, a 10 year old boy and a 6 year old girl and one rambunctious puppers named after a notorious vampire, Niklaus Mikaelson. Fun facts about myself.. I totally should have been in the 20s and The Notebook Era. I love Vamps! I love to sing, dance, ride my motorcycle with friends/family (my kids also ride), and I love decorating for birthdays, parties, and holidays. All the holidays are my favorite just because there’s always something fun or a tradition I do with my family. My previous employment was working car insurance and already I enjoy the fun experiences and great friends I have met so far in the Salmon Bay community. Feel free to come say Hi or reach out anytime!
Shannon Robinson
Hello Salmon Bay!
I am thrilled to join the team here at Salmon Bay as the Protected Health Care Room Supervisor. My name is Shannon Ginn Robinson and I am also a Salmon Bay parent of a 6th grader, Colin Robinson, a 1st grader, Cora Robinson, as well as a parent to a sophomore in college. I am passionate about health and hold a masters in public health and am a certified health and wellness coach. Before Covid, I worked for a statewide educational non-profit as a project manager. I enjoy traveling, playing cribbage, getting out in the sunshine, moving my body whenever I can, and cooking up tasty meals for friends and family.

  • Coaching 2 practices per week (combined total can be no more than 3.5 hours)
  • Games on Saturdays (typically just one)
  • Positive attitude is a must…experience can be limited!

Join the FOSB Board of Directors
The November FOSB board meeting includes the opportunity to vote in additional directors. Salmon Bay parents, guardians, and teachers are automatically FOSB members, with a full voice and vote on matters that come before us, so why become a director? This helpful page on the FOSB website explains the various types of involvement. Directors make a commitment to attend monthly meetings and participate in important discussions on topics like the school budget, FOSB activities, and general direction of the organization. Interested individuals should email Jackie and Caitlin, FOSB Co-chairs, at fosbchair@gmail.com. We hope you’ll consider joining us!
