THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, August 23 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

"I believe that you see something that you want to get done, you cannot give up, and you cannot give in."

This summer we lost Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero, a man of towering moral integrity, and member of Congress for 33 years. When he died the whole nation mourned, and four former presidents offered words of gratitude and admiration at his funeral service. In this service we will celebrate, learn from, and be inspired by his life and words.

UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, August 16.

From Sam Beshers: My father, Daniel Beshers, turned 92 on Thursday. And he still loves a bad pun.

From Christine Cahill: A sorrow - Our beloved 19 year-old tabby cat, Faust, is no longer filling our house with cat conversation. I lived with Faust longer than any person in my life, including my dear children. And a joy - A great joy occurred on the very same day, Friday morning, August 13, when daughter Colleen and son-in-law Tony welcomed Jack Cahill Calabro into the world 4 weeks early. Jack was 5 pounds 9 ounces and did not need to be admitted to the neo-natal intensive care unit. The new family will be all together in hospital in Denver and should go home on Sunday. Husband Michael and I are thrilled to become grandparents.

From Paul Kaiser and Family: Sharing my household's joy at seeing the expressive piano playing of Sam G return to the August 9 service. Sam, your energy is appreciated.

Please send your joys and sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org in advance of the service each week, by 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of August, we will support the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a non-partisan movement to advocate for stronger gun laws. 36,000+ people per year die from gun deaths through mass shootings, suicide, domestic abuse, and accidental shootings. Solutions to gun violence are straightforward: stronger background checks, holding the gun industry accountable, removing guns from domestic abusers and suicidal people, and stopping gun trafficking and the sale of military grade weapons. RECENT SHARED OFFERINGS

During the month of July 2020, Wesley Food Pantry was selected to be the shared offering. The UUCUC congregation contributed a total of $1,925 that month!

In the fall of 2006, the Eastern Illinois Foodbank informed church members of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana that there was an urgent need for a food pantry in Champaign County that offered emergency food during evening hours. In response to this need, three church members started the Wesley Evening Food Pantry that November. The very first food distribution served one family of five. Almost 15 years later, Wesley Food Pantry provides food to an average of 1600 people every month with weekly distributions at the Wesley UMC and satellite locations at Parkland College and the University of Illinois Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).
