The EPIC Fall Season begins!
Fall 2020 finds all of us living in a teetering world, and in ways we never envisioned. Some antidotes to our seemingly unending and depressing stress are keeping your mind active, your body engaged and your heart filled with companionship - even in a pixillated form. While our EPIC Fellowship can't provide a cure-all, we can help alleviate some symptoms through creative programming, yoga and communication. We look forward to "seeing" you at our events.

EPIC Conversation - Fall 2020
Roger Lehecka

EPIC's highly successful conversational series between notable emeriti is curated by Seth Low Emeritus Professor of History Volker Berghahn. We continue the series with a lively conversation between Roger Lehecka, Dean of Students for 19 years and founder of Columbia's Upward Bound Program in 1965 and Professor Emerita Fran Pritchett, now a volunteer in the Double Discovery programs created by Lehecka.
For over fifty years, the nationwide Upward Bound program has been helping youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds prepare for college. Double Discovery is Columbia's version of this very successful program. You'll enjoy hearing about its history from Roger Lehecka, who was an undergrad Columbia math major when he and a few friends first applied for a grant for a wild summer project.... In a sense it's a story of our generation, and its impact is still increasing.

A question and answer period will follow the conversation.

EPIC Expands Graduate Scholar Series

To help support scholarship, EPIC is expanding its lecture series and increasing honoraria. While the pandemic has dealt a serious blow to graduate education, it has also provided more opportunity for EPICureans to attend virtual meetings. Prof. Emeritus Dan Thys curates the series which serves as an interdisciplinary learning experience for the scholars and always interesting presentations for attendees.
Have suggestions about outstanding advanced doctoral students or post-doctoral or research Fellows? Send them in.

ONLINE EPIC Yoga: Every Thursday
10 am - 11 am and 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Professor Emerita Virginia Papaioannou, a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance, leads EPIC Yoga.
No prior experience is required to join. Yoga can benefit people at all levels of physical training and health, but it is always wise to consult with a physician before undertaking any new exercise regime. Modifications will be offered to any participants with specific limitations arising from recovery from injury, arthritis, limited movement, or other causes.

Two one-hour classes are offered each week. The 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. class practices breathing techniques and moves through some basic yoga poses, concentrating on alignment, balance, and flexibility. Those with experience move more deeply into the poses. From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., we practice gentle/chair yoga, which is ideal for those of more limited mobility or flexibility. Classes include breathing, stretching, and yoga poses, done either seated in a chair or standing. No yoga mats are required for this class.
