Greetings, Community Partners –

One of our college values is collective responsibility. We note this value as a way to emphasize that all LSC employees are responsible for helping our students succeed. However, when looking at all the contributions provided by community partners, I will note that this value extends far beyond the walls of our colleges. It is shared throughout our service area communities.

As we move into our third year, I want to highlight just how our students will benefit from the generosity of our community and institutional partners. Note that these are just a few examples.

  • Mobile Markets – Starting this fall, LSC-Houston North students, through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank, will be eligible to receive up to 60lbs of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and other food items twice per month. Eligibility is simply enrollment into six credit hours (two courses) at LSC-Houston North. This will complement our current CARE Centers.

  • Internet Essentials – Comcast has agreed to extend their Internet service program to students in specific zip codes within LSC-Houston North’s service area. Through this program, eligible students will receive six months of free Internet service.

  • Technology Devices – The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston generously provided several laptops for LSC-Houston North students in need. Students enrolled in fall classes at LSC-Houston North will be eligible to receive these devices while supplies last. This is in addition to the laptop loaner program created by our Chancellor, Dr. Stephen C. Head.

  • Housing Insecurity Support – The United Way recently provided their 2-1-1 training to over 40 LSC-Houston North faculty and staff as well as our Communities in Schools Counselors. While homelessness is a complicated issue, LSC-Houston North will be in a much better position this fall to connect students to needed resources.

  • Career Preparation – Workforce Solutions has agreed to provide students with resume work and mock interviews. In addition, they are enrolling our students into their employment database so that our graduates will be able to more easily find jobs.

Dr. Stephen C. Head, Lone Star College Chancellor, noted when announcing his vision for Lone Star College-Houston North, that if students do 51% of the work, we will do the other 49%. It is this direction that inherently notes that by investing in people, we are investing in the betterment of our communities.

Many of these services, along with other student benefits such as tuition relief, emergency funds, and textbook support are possible by many different types of donations. Even those that feel small in nature can often make a big difference to our students. Therefore, if you want to contribute to the ongoing support of our students, please consider supporting our Panther Pact fund.
In addition to financial support, please continue to let others know that we are in the midst of fall registration. We are starting several new programs this fall including eSports, Logistics Management, Teacher Preparation, Mobile Application/Web Design, and Game Design. In addition, we are also expanding our Puente program, an initiative that takes a culturally relevant approach to our English and Learning Frameworks courses, as well as a new partnership with Stephen F. Austin, which will allow students to train to become STEM teachers.

Lone Star College is one of the best community colleges in the country. While much of the reason has to do with our faculty, staff, and leaderships, we also recognize that our community partners also play a vital role. Thank you for supporting our students and helping Lone Star College-Houston North be a college of the community.

Sincerely,
Quentin Wright, Ed.D.
President, Lone Star College-Houston North

Eliminating Food Insecurities

With the right structure and adequate support, our students are capable of succeeding academically and professionally.

For this reason, we have Community Assistance Resource for Everyone (C.A.R.E.) Centers that are located at all LSC-Houston North locations.

The CARE Center is open to any currently enrolled LSC-Houston North student and provides CARE bags and CARE packages that include food, toiletries, and other essentials.
Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.

Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.
