The US health care system is increasingly moving towards value-based care to promote improved health outcomes for Americans. This can be seen across Medicare Advantage Plans (MA Plans), Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), and Certified Community Behavioral Health Centers (CCBHC), among others. This movement also demands a transformation of reimbursement models to value-based contracting, with a focus on sharing risk across stakeholders and controlling costs to improve patient health.

The long-term care industry is facing an employment crisis, and providers must go beyond traditional compensation and benefit offerings to solve them. This industry’s employee demographic operates with unique characteristics that influence their needs and desires from an employer. Employers must consider their employees’ social determinants of health in order to build a customized incentive, compensation and benefit plan that fits their needs.
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) is hopeful about the Social Determinants Accelerator Act, a bill she’s cosponsored to help get funding directly to communities for the purpose of addressing social determinants of health. The bipartisan bill, among other proposed legislation, got airtime late last week during a hearing of the House Committee on Energy & Commerce. Specifically, the hearing touched on appropriations for a pilot program born out of the legislation
Accountable care organization (ACO) growth has hit a snag again, with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the number of ACOs in public and private contracts, according to a new analysis. The analysis published in the Health Affairs blog found that ACO growth has plateaued over the last couple of years, starting in 2019 when CMS introduced higher downside financial risk to its flagship ACO model, the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP).
