How Might We...

Support Inclusive Environments for Growth

Fall is my favorite season, mostly because of the beautiful colors that change the scenery when walking or driving around campus and local neighborhoods. The changing season is a good reminder of the richness of the foliage and the beauty of our environment. The MSU environment increasingly reflects the diversity of our students and educators in their roles and backgrounds. Honoring our environment requires a commitment to inclusivity that we intentionally weave into our everyday interactions and connections. Inclusivity can be as natural as the changing of the leaves and the beauty of the four seasons. Pushing Forward:

Promoting Momentum and Upward Movement

“People need to be given clear opportunities to advance if and when they have shown that they should be valued by the institution. Having a clear pathway to that not only recognizes the person when they achieve it, but it gives them something to try to achieve,” said Kate Birdsall, associate professor and president of the Union of Non-Tenure Faculty at MSU, this means, if employees have a goal to work toward, they are working, and that benefits not only the employer but also the employee.

Jack Kottwitz

Assistant Professor

Large Animal Clinical Sciences

College of Veterinarian Medicine

kottwitz@msu.edu

"Dr. Kottwitz is an outstanding member of the teaching community at MSU, both at our College of Veterinary Medicine and the department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. He excels in teaching strategies to expand clinical reasoning, is constantly engaged in the development of real world case material for student, and draws from years in clinical practices, zoological institutions, and academic institutions. He encompasses the true spirit of "one health" as there are few in this institution, or even the world, that have treated the depth and breadth of species he has managed. Students are drawn to the stories he relates, which are amazing-from the birth of a baby rhinoceros, to the management of arthritis in an elephant, or even the anesthesia of a black widow spider....he has been there and done that and provides an example of the endless possibilities in our veterinary profession. These experiences, combined with his extensive background in teaching and active learning theories, provide a bar we should all strive to meet!"
